Full Description
Visegrád and the Danube Bend
The Danube Bend is where the great river cuts through the volcanic hills north of Budapest and turns almost 90 degrees toward the south. Visegrád sits at its sharpest point, and the panorama over the river valley from the hilltop citadel is one of the classic views of Hungary. Many travellers search for a Visegrád day trip from Budapest because of this scenery.
Visegrád was a royal seat in the Middle Ages. In 1335 the kings of Bohemia, Poland and Hungary met here, and later King Matthias Corvinus built a Renaissance palace, whose old stones your guide takes you close to. Entry fees to individual sights are not included, but there is time to walk, see the ruins and take photos.
Esztergom Basilica
Esztergom was Hungary's first capital and remains the seat of the Catholic Church in the country. Its Basilica, built in the 19th century on a hilltop above the river, is the largest church in Hungary, and its green dome can be seen from far away. Inside, the Bakócz Chapel from the early 16th century is a rare Renaissance jewel, and the crypt holds the tombs of several archbishops.
From the terrace beside the basilica you look across the Danube to Slovakia, with the Mária Valéria Bridge linking the two countries. Your guide explains the history, and you have time for the visit and for photos. Opening hours and visiting areas change by day, so we recommend allowing a flexible plan.
Szentendre, the artists' town
Szentendre is a small baroque town on the Danube, about 20 kilometres north of Budapest, and one of the most charming day trips from Budapest. Serbian, Greek and Dalmatian settlers arrived in the 17th century and built the churches and merchant houses that give the town its Mediterranean character, with colourful facades, courtyards and steep cobbled lanes.
Today Szentendre is known for its art galleries, small museums and craft shops, and for marzipan and ceramics. Your guide points out the main square and the best route up to a viewpoint above the river. Give yourself time to wander without a fixed plan, as this is the relaxed stop of the day.
The river leg and how the day works
In season, from May to September, a boat ticket is included and a part of the trip is made on the Danube itself, a pleasant way to see the river landscape. When the water level is too high or too low, or outside the season, the river leg is replaced by road transport, and the programme of visits stays the same.
This is a long shared day of about nine hours in an air-conditioned vehicle, so it is well suited to travellers who want three very different towns without driving. Lunch is not included, and there are cafés and restaurants at every stop.
