Full Description

Matthias Church, the coronation church of Buda Castle Hill

Officially the Church of Our Lady, Matthias Church is named after King Matthias Corvinus, the Renaissance ruler who was married here and who enlarged the building in the 15th century. The first church on the site dates back to the 13th century under King Béla IV, and for 145 years under Ottoman rule it served as the main mosque of Buda.

It became the stage of Hungarian royal ceremonies: Franz Joseph and Elisabeth were crowned here in 1867, and the last Habsburg king, Charles IV, in 1916. The present appearance comes from the great restoration of Frigyes Schulek in the late 19th century. If you are wondering whether Matthias Church is worth visiting, its history alone makes it one of the essential stops in Budapest.

Inside Matthias Church: painted walls, stained glass and carved stone

Step inside and the surprise is the colour. Unlike many Gothic churches, the walls and pillars are covered with painted patterns and religious scenes in red, blue and gold, created by artists such as Bertalan Székely and Károly Lotz. Tall stained-glass windows fill the nave with coloured light, especially in the afternoon.

Look for the side chapels, the carved pulpit, the royal oratory and the details of the vaulting. The interior is smaller than St Stephen's Basilica but far more intimate. Allow about 30 to 45 minutes for the church itself, and note that the church is still used for services and concerts, so parts of it can be closed at times.

The roof, the tower and Fisherman's Bastion

From the outside, the steep roof of glazed Zsolnay tiles in zigzag patterns is what most visitors photograph, together with the tall Béla tower at the southern corner. Please note that this ticket covers the church only; the tower has its own separate ticket that is not included here.

Right beside the church is Fisherman's Bastion, the white neo-Romanesque terrace with cone-shaped turrets that gives the best view over the Danube and the Parliament. Both were designed by Schulek, so they look like a pair. The Holy Trinity Column stands in the square between them, a plague monument from the 18th century.

Matthias Church opening hours, tickets and how to get there

Matthias Church opening hours change by day and season, and worship or special events can close it to visitors, so the booking panel shows the entry window for your date. Your ticket is valid for one day and you show your voucher at the entrance. The best time to visit is in the morning or late afternoon, when the square is calmer.

To get there, take the Castle Hill funicular from the Chain Bridge, or ride a bus up from Deák Ferenc tér or Széll Kálmán tér, and walk into Szentháromság tér. The church is about a ten-minute walk from Buda Castle, so it fits well into a full Castle District day.
