Full Description
Matthias Church on Castle Hill
Matthias Church, officially the Church of Our Lady, stands on Castle Hill in Buda beside the Fisherman's Bastion. Its roots go back to the thirteenth century under King Béla IV, and it takes its popular name from King Matthias Corvinus, who was married here in the fifteenth century. In 1867 the Habsburg emperor Franz Joseph was crowned King of Hungary in this church.
During the Ottoman period the building served as a mosque, and its present neo-Gothic appearance comes from a late nineteenth-century restoration. Its most recognisable feature is the colourful Zsolnay tile roof, and inside you find painted walls, stained glass and arches that are a rich setting for music.
The Best of Classic concert programme
The Best of Classic programme is built from well-loved works. It includes Pachelbel's Canon, the Winter concerto of Vivaldi's Four Seasons and his Gloria, Bach's Violin Concerto in E major and Air, Handel's Water Music, Albinoni's Adagio, Mozart's Church Sonata and his Alleluja, Saint-Saëns' The Swan, Franck's Panis Angelicus and Massenet's Meditation from Thaïs.
The concert is performed by the Duna String Orchestra with violin soloist Gyula Gábora, and the line-up can change by date. The programme suits both newcomers to classical music and regular concert-goers, because you will recognise many of the melodies, and the acoustics of the church give them a rich, warm sound.
Seating: Category A or VIP
The booking panel lets you choose between two seating options. VIP seating is the area with the best view in the church, closest to the musicians. Category A seating is the area right behind the VIP section and gives a very good view at a more moderate level.
Both give you the same programme and the same concert. If you want the closest position and the clearest view of the soloist, choose VIP; if you are happy to sit a little further back, Category A is an excellent choice.
