Full Description
The Kuala Gandah elephant centre
The National Elephant Conservation Centre at Kuala Gandah, in the village of Lanchang in Pahang, was founded in 1989 by Malaysia's wildlife department. It is the base of a team that rescues wild Asian elephants from areas where they come into conflict with farms and villages, and moves them to protected forests. Some elephants, often orphans or animals that cannot return to the wild, live at the centre permanently.
This Kuala Gandah day trip from Kuala Lumpur covers about 150 kilometres each way along the Karak Highway, crossing the forested Titiwangsa Range, the backbone of the peninsula. The drive takes about an hour and a half, and the green hills, plantations and small villages along the road give you a glimpse of rural Malaysia that most visitors to the capital never see.
With the nature guide at the elephant centre
At the centre a nature guide joins your group for about two hours. You learn how the centre cares for its elephants, how relocation works and why habitat loss threatens the species, and you watch the elephants in their forest surroundings. At set times the centre's programme may include feeding sessions; all activities are run by the centre and follow its own schedule and safety requirements.
Asian elephants are highly social and intelligent, and watching a calf stay close to its mother is a highlight for children and adults alike. Please follow the guide's instructions, keep a respectful distance and never feed the animals without permission. Note that the nature guide accompanies you only at the elephant centre; the rest of the day is led by your English-speaking driver.
Batu Caves
Next comes Batu Caves, a limestone hill about 400 million years old on the northern edge of Kuala Lumpur and the most important Hindu shrine in Malaysia. A golden statue of the deity Murugan, around 42.7 metres tall, greets you at the foot, and 272 rainbow-painted steps climb to the Temple Cave, whose ceiling rises about 100 metres above the floor.
You have about two hours here, enough to climb the steps, explore the cave and browse the stalls at the base, or simply enjoy the statue and take photos if you prefer not to climb. Long-tailed macaques roam the steps, so keep food out of sight. Is Batu Caves worth visiting? Its scale, colours and the sound of temple bells make it one of the most memorable sights near the capital. Shoulders and knees should be covered.
Kuala Lumpur city tour: palace, mosque and square
The day ends with a city tour of about two hours. Depending on timing and traffic you see the gates of Istana Negara, the official residence of Malaysia's king, guarded by soldiers in ceremonial dress, and the National Mosque, opened in 1965, with its star-shaped blue roof and 73-metre minaret. Visitors of all faiths are welcome outside prayer times, with robes lent at the door.
At Merdeka Square you stand where Malaysia's flag was first raised at midnight on 31 August 1957, facing the copper domes and clock tower of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building from 1897. This compact Kuala Lumpur city tour is a good introduction for first-time visitors, pointing out places you may want to return to later, such as Chinatown and the River of Life.
Petronas Twin Towers and KL Tower
The last stop is a photo stop at one of the city's two great towers, chosen according to time and traffic. The Petronas Twin Towers rise 452 metres over 88 floors and were the world's tallest buildings from 1998 to 2004; their floor plan forms an eight-pointed star inspired by Islamic design, and a skybridge links the two towers high above the park.
KL Tower, 421 metres tall, stands on the forested hill of Bukit Nanas and offers some of the best views of the skyline from its observation deck (tickets not included). After the photo stop you are dropped back in Bukit Bintang or at the Malaysia Tourism Centre, close to the city's malls and restaurants, where halal food and prayer rooms are easy to find.
