Full Description

Sunway Lagoon theme park

Sunway Lagoon lies in Bandar Sunway, in the Selangor suburbs south-west of Kuala Lumpur, and opened in 1993 on the site of a former tin mine and sand quarry. The old quarry lake and cliffs now form the backdrop of a large multi-zone theme park, with a long pedestrian suspension bridge crossing the lagoon and thrill rides set against the rock walls.

Is Sunway Lagoon worth visiting? For families and water-park fans it is one of the most popular days out from Kuala Lumpur, mixing water fun, rides and animals in a single ticket. Plan the full day: most visitors arrive at opening, start with the water park while it is quieter and save the dry rides for the afternoon. Opening hours are usually from mid-morning to early evening, and days can vary outside school holidays, so we confirm before your visit.

The Water Park

The water park is the heart of Sunway Lagoon. Its Surf Beach is a huge man-made wave pool with real rolling waves, framed by palm trees and the quarry cliffs. Around it are tube slides, body slides, a lazy river for floating along on a ring, and the Vuvuzela, a giant funnel ride in which your raft swings up the walls of an enormous cone.

Younger children have their own splash zones with shallow pools, small slides and water cannons, so the whole family can enjoy the day together. Proper swimwear is required on the water rides, and modest full-cover swimwear is common and welcome. Lockers, changing rooms and showers are available, and it is wise to rent a locker early for your bags and phones.

The Amusement Park and Extreme Park

Across the lagoon the amusement park offers dry rides for all ages: roller coasters, spinning rides, a swinging pirate ship and gentle carousels and kiddie rides for small children. Some rides have height limits, which are clearly marked at each entrance, and waiting times are usually shortest in the late morning while most visitors are in the water.

The Extreme Park zone has adrenaline activities such as a bungy jump, go-karts and a high-speed G-Force ride. These pay-per-ride Extreme Park attractions are not included in this ticket and can be bought separately at the park if you wish to try them. Everything else in the included zones is unlimited, so you can ride your favourites as many times as you like.

The Wildlife Park

The wildlife park is a shaded, quieter part of Sunway Lagoon, home to birds, reptiles, lemurs, small mammals and other animals from Southeast Asia and beyond. Walkways lead past open enclosures and aviaries, and keepers run talks and feeding sessions at set times, a highlight for children who enjoy seeing animals up close.

It is a good place to dry off and slow down between water slides, and the shade is welcome in the hottest hours of the afternoon. Check the daily schedule at the entrance for animal shows and encounters, and follow the keepers' guidance around the animals. Benches and small cafés nearby make it an easy spot for parents to rest while children explore.

Bandar Sunway and how to get to Sunway Lagoon

Bandar Sunway is a planned township about 25 kilometres from central Kuala Lumpur, built around the park, a large shopping mall decorated with an Egyptian-style pyramid and lion, hotels and a university. Prayer rooms and halal food outlets are easy to find in the park and in the mall next door, as almost everywhere in Malaysia.

How to get to Sunway Lagoon from Kuala Lumpur: by road it takes around 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic, and public transport involves changes between train and bus lines. This ticket solves that with a shared return transfer from your hotel, leaving at 09:30 and bringing you back after about eight hours, so you can relax and enjoy the day.
