Full Description
From Kuala Lumpur to the highlands
How to get to the Cameron Highlands from Kuala Lumpur? By road it takes about 3.5 to 4 hours: north on the North-South Expressway to Tapah, then up the winding mountain road through the jungle to Ringlet and Tanah Rata. With a private car you avoid bus timetables and can leave at a time that suits you, between 07:00 and 09:00.
Our driver-guide makes the long drive comfortable, with rest stops at highway service areas that have prayer rooms (surau) and halal food, and Wi-Fi on board to keep you connected. As you climb above 1,000 metres the temperature drops, the air freshens and the first tea terraces appear on the slopes, a welcome change from the city.
Lata Iskandar waterfall
Halfway up the mountain road from Tapah, the Lata Iskandar waterfall tumbles over smooth rock slabs right beside the road. It is the traditional first stop for travellers heading to the highlands, a chance to stretch your legs, feel the cool spray and photograph the cascade framed by tall tropical trees.
Stalls next to the falls sell local fruit, honey and handicrafts, and the stop takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Swimming is not recommended because the rocks are slippery and the current can be strong after rain. From here the road continues to wind up through the forest for about another 45 minutes to Ringlet. In the drier months the flow is gentle, while after heavy rain the falls are at their most powerful.
The tea plantations
The Cameron Highlands produce much of Malaysia's tea, and the plantations are the reason most visitors come. Neat rows of tea bushes cover whole hillsides in bright green, divided by narrow paths used by the pickers. From the tea houses perched above the estates you can look over the valleys while you enjoy a cup of fresh tea and a slice of cake at your own expense.
Your driver-guide chooses the estate according to the day and the crowds; the best-known tea centre, Sungai Palas, closes on Mondays. Allow about an hour to walk to the viewpoints, learn how tea is processed and take photos among the bushes. On a private tour you can linger longer here if you prefer tea to farms.
The Mossy Forest on Gunung Brinchang
Near the summit of Gunung Brinchang, at around 2,000 metres, the Mossy Forest is a true cloud forest where moss, lichens and ferns cover every branch and pitcher plants and wild orchids grow along a wooden boardwalk. The mist drifts through the stunted trees, and the temperature is often only 12 to 18°C.
The final road is narrow and rough, so the last part is done in a local 4x4; the 4x4 ticket and the entrance are paid on site and are not included. Is the Mossy Forest worth visiting? It is the most unusual landscape in the highlands and a highlight for nature lovers. Allow about 1.5 hours including the 4x4 ride, and bring a jacket and non-slip shoes.
Strawberry farm and Brinchang
The highlands are Malaysia's main strawberry region, with farms growing the fruit under clear shelters around Brinchang and Kea Farm. You can see the plants, pick your own (paid by weight) and try strawberry treats, while the nearby Kea Farm market sells highland vegetables, flowers and honey.
This stop is also a good moment for lunch, which is not included: Brinchang and Tanah Rata have many halal restaurants, and there are mosques in both towns. After the farm your driver-guide starts the drive back to Kuala Lumpur. What is the best time to visit the Cameron Highlands? The mornings are clearest, and February to April is usually the driest season.
