Full Description
Taman Negara, Malaysia's rainforest national park
Taman Negara is Malaysia's oldest national park, established in 1938, and covers thousands of square kilometres of forest across the states of Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu. Its rainforest is often described as over 130 million years old, older than the Amazon and the Congo, and it shelters tigers, elephants, tapirs and hundreds of bird species, although most large animals are shy and rarely seen on a day visit.
On a Taman Negara day trip from Kuala Lumpur you are more likely to notice giant trees, buttress roots, lianas, butterflies, birds and insects, and your guide explains how the forest works. The park is a place to slow down and listen, and it is a welcome contrast to the towers of the capital.
The Canopy Walkway above the treetops
The Canopy Walkway is a series of narrow suspended bridges strung between tall trees, roughly half a kilometre long and around 40 metres above the forest floor, and it is often described as one of the longest of its kind in the world. Walking on it gives a bird's-eye view of the canopy, where much of the forest's life takes place.
The bridges are crossed one at a time and sway gently, so the walkway is not suitable for people who are afraid of heights. It is included with the Canopy Walkway option and is not part of the Viewpoint trek option. Wear shoes with a good grip and keep your camera on a strap; the camera fee is already included.
Rainforest trek to the Viewpoint
The Viewpoint option replaces the canopy walk with a guided rainforest trek, usually on the trail to the hill known as Bukit Teresek. The path climbs steadily through primary forest on roots and steps, and at the top a viewpoint gives a wide look over the forest and the river below. It is a moderate effort, and the humidity makes it feel harder than the distance suggests.
Wear long, quick-dry trousers or socks and use insect repellent, since leeches and mosquitoes are part of the rainforest. Carry water and keep your hands free for balance. The trek is not included in the Canopy Walkway option, so choose the activity that matches your fitness and interests.
How the day works from Kuala Lumpur
Hotel pickup covers hotels in the Golden Triangle area of Kuala Lumpur, excluding the Pudu area, and a minimum of two adults staying at the same hotel is required. If you stay elsewhere, message us and we will suggest the best arrangement. The trip involves a long drive each way, so the day starts early and ends in the evening, lasting about 15 hours in total.
A light lunch is included, and you may want to bring snacks and extra water. The drier months from about March to September are generally more comfortable for trails, while heavy rain can affect river crossings and paths. Children aged 7 to 12 have their own category; under 7 cannot join the hotel pickup options.
