Full Description

Batu Caves: the limestone hill north of Kuala Lumpur

Batu Caves is a limestone massif about 13 kilometres north of the city centre, in the Gombak district of Selangor. The rock is estimated to be around 400 million years old, and rain and rivers have carved a series of caves into its cliffs. Since the late 19th century the largest cave has been a Hindu shrine, and today it is the most important Hindu site in Malaysia and one of the country's best-known landmarks.

Many visitors ask how to get to Batu Caves: there is a commuter train from KL Sentral, but on this private tour our driver-guide collects you at your hotel and the drive takes about 30 minutes, with the story of the temple told on the way. Is Batu Caves worth visiting? For the scale of the cave, the colours of the stairs and the living atmosphere of a place of worship, it is one of the essential experiences of any stay in Kuala Lumpur.

The golden statue, the rainbow steps and the Temple Cave

At the foot of the hill stands a golden statue of the Hindu deity Murugan, about 42.7 metres tall and unveiled in 2006, one of the tallest Hindu statues anywhere. Behind it climb the 272 steps to the Temple Cave, painted in bright rainbow colours in 2018 and now among the most photographed staircases in Asia. Long-tailed macaques live on the cliffs; keep food and plastic bags out of sight and watch them from a distance.

At the top you enter the Temple Cave, a vast chamber with a ceiling around 100 metres high and openings that let in shafts of daylight. Small shrines, the sound of bells and the scent of incense show that this is a living temple. Batu Caves opening hours are roughly from early morning until evening every day; with the 8:30 departure you arrive before the heat and the largest crowds. During the Thaipusam festival in January or February the site fills with pilgrims.

The Ramayana Cave

Near the entrance to the complex, guarded by a tall green statue of Hanuman, the Ramayana Cave tells the great Hindu epic in a series of brightly lit sculptures and painted walls. You follow the story of Rama, Sita and Hanuman through the cave in an easy walk on level paths, with a few steps inside. Your entry ticket is included in this private tour.

Look out for the Suyambu Lingam, a natural limestone formation that worshippers regard as sacred, and for the clever use of coloured light on the rock. Allow about 30 to 45 minutes. The Ramayana Cave is a good choice for families with young children or anyone who prefers not to climb the long staircase, as it gives a full sense of the art and devotion of Batu Caves at ground level.

A traditional batik workshop (optional)

Batik is one of Malaysia's best-loved crafts, rooted in the east-coast states of Kelantan and Terengganu. Artists draw patterns of flowers, leaves and waves on cotton or silk with hot wax using a small copper tool called a canting, then dye the cloth in bright colours; the wax resists the dye and leaves the design behind. Many pieces are hand-painted, so no two are exactly the same.

On the way back to the city our driver-guide can stop at a batik workshop for about 25 minutes, where you watch artisans at work and browse scarves, shirts and sarongs. The stop is entirely optional: if you would rather head straight back to your hotel or add a little more time at Batu Caves, just tell your guide. That freedom to shape the morning is exactly what a private tour gives you.
