Overview
This small-group afternoon and evening tour from Kota Kinabalu packs three of Sabah's most photogenic experiences into seven hours. We pick you up at your hotel in the city and drive south-west to the Bongawan area, where a mangrove river cruise looks for proboscis monkeys and other wildlife. At sunset you walk onto Dream Beach for a sky-mirror photo session with a photographer, when the wet sand reflects the sky like glass. After dinner you board again for a quiet cruise to see fireflies glowing in the mangrove trees. Groups are limited to six travellers, so there is space to ask the local guide questions and get good photos. It suits couples, friends and families who love nature and photography.

Full Description
Bongawan Mangroves, Sabah
Bongawan lies on the west coast of Sabah, about 1.5 to 2 hours by road south-west of Kota Kinabalu, where a slow river runs through nipa palms and mangrove forest to the sea. The area is quieter than the region's better-known wildlife rivers, which keeps the cruises calm. Mangroves protect the coast, shelter young fish and support a rich mix of birds, reptiles and primates.
How to get to Bongawan without a tour is difficult, as there is no direct public transport to the river jetty, so a Bongawan mangrove tour from Kota Kinabalu with hotel transfers is the easiest option. Life jackets are provided on the boat, and the jetty area has toilets and simple facilities.
Proboscis Monkey Cruise
The first cruise sets out in the late afternoon, the best time to see the proboscis monkey, a species found only on Borneo. Males are known for their long, drooping noses and large bellies, and family groups gather in riverside trees to feed on leaves and settle for the night. Your guide also points out long-tailed macaques, monitor lizards, kingfishers and egrets.
Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, though the chances are good on most days. The boat keeps a respectful distance and the engine is slowed near the animals, so keep voices low. A camera with zoom or binoculars makes a big difference for watching the monkeys high in the canopy.
Dream Beach Sky Mirror
Dream Beach is a long, flat stretch of sand on this coast where, on calm evenings at low tide, a thin film of water lies on the beach and reflects the sky like a mirror. People seem to float between two skies, which is why the sky-mirror photo session has become one of the most popular things to do near Kota Kinabalu. A photographer guides your poses and captures the reflections at sunset.
The effect depends on tide, wind and cloud, so every session is different and a perfect mirror cannot be promised. The best time to visit Dream Beach is usually the drier season from March to September. Wear light clothing that can get wet at the hem, and bring sandals for walking on the wet sand.
Fireflies in the Mangrove Trees
After dinner, the second cruise heads back into the mangroves in the dark. Fireflies gather in particular riverside trees and flash together, so the branches twinkle like strings of tiny lights. The boat moves slowly with lights dimmed, and the guide stops beside the brightest trees so you can enjoy the scene in silence.
Fireflies are easiest to see on dark, dry nights, and fewer may appear around the full moon or after heavy rain. Please avoid flash photography and never try to catch them; the colonies depend on healthy mangrove trees along the river. After the cruise our driver brings you back to your hotel in Kota Kinabalu around 20:00 to 21:00, with time to rest on the quiet drive north along the coast.
