Full Description

Taman Negara: Malaysia's great national park

Taman Negara, which simply means national park in Malay, was first protected in 1938 and covers about 4,343 square kilometres across the states of Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu. Its lowland dipterocarp forest is often described as one of the oldest rainforests in the world, estimated at around 130 million years. Giant trees, rattan palms, wild orchids and clear rivers make it a living museum of tropical nature.

The park shelters rare animals such as the Malayan tapir, the Asian elephant and the Malayan tiger, though these shy creatures are very seldom seen. On a day visit you are more likely to spot hornbills, colourful kingfishers, monitor lizards, macaques, giant ants and butterflies; sightings are never guaranteed. Is Taman Negara worth visiting? For anyone who has never walked in true primary rainforest, the sounds, scents and scale of the trees are unforgettable.

Getting there: from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Tahan

Many travellers ask how to get to Taman Negara. The usual gateway is Kuala Tahan, a riverside village where the Tahan and Tembeling rivers meet, about 250 kilometres north-east of Kuala Lumpur. Public buses and boats take most of a day each way, which is why most visitors stay overnight. With a private vehicle the drive takes about four hours via Jerantut, through palm plantations and forested hills, with a rest stop on the way.

At Kuala Tahan the park headquarters sits on the opposite bank from the village. You cross by a traditional riverboat in just a few minutes, a fun start to the jungle part of the day. The village has simple riverside restaurants serving Malaysian food, mostly halal, and a small mosque, so it is easy to take a lunch break or pray before or after the trek.

The rainforest trek with your nature guide

From the park headquarters your private licensed nature guide leads you along well-marked boardwalks and forest trails. Along the way you learn how the forest works: the buttress roots of the tallest trees, the strangler figs that slowly wrap their hosts, medicinal plants used by the indigenous Batek people, and the tracks and calls of animals hidden in the undergrowth.

Depending on time and conditions, the trek can include part of the trail towards Bukit Teresek, a hill with views across the forest canopy to the distant mountains. The paths are mostly easy to moderate but humid, with roots, steps and some muddy sections after rain. With a guide only for your party, the pace is set by your group: children and slower walkers are never rushed, and keen photographers can stop as often as they like.

The Canopy Walkway

The highlight for many visitors is the Canopy Walkway, a chain of narrow rope bridges and platforms about 500 metres long, suspended up to around 40 metres above the forest floor. Walking from tree to tree, you see the rainforest from the level of birds and monkeys, where orchids and ferns grow on the high branches and the light filters through layers of green.

The walkway sways gently and takes about 30 to 45 minutes to cross, one person at a time on each section. It has set daily opening hours and may close in heavy rain or for maintenance, so our nature guide plans the day around it. If anyone in your party prefers not to go up, they can wait at the base or continue on the forest trail with the guide. Shoes with good grip are essential.

Long-tail boat on the Tahan River and Lata Berkoh

In the afternoon you board a private long-tail boat, a traditional narrow wooden boat with an outboard engine, for a cruise up the Tahan River. The boatman steers between rocks and shallow rapids while the forest leans over the water on both banks. Watch for kingfishers, monitor lizards sunning on the rocks and, with luck, a troop of monkeys in the trees.

The cruise heads towards Lata Berkoh, a series of rapids and small cascades where the river runs clear over granite boulders. When the water level is safe you can cool off with a swim in the calm pools; bring swimwear and a towel. The best time to visit Taman Negara is the drier season from around March to October; during the north-east monsoon from November to February, river levels rise and some activities may be limited.
