Full Description
Kota Kinabalu Waterfront and the Bay
Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah on the island of Borneo, faces a wide bay sprinkled with green islands, and leaving the marina by boat is the best way to understand its setting. As the catamaran pulls away you see the waterfront, the hills of the city and, on clear days, the silhouette of Mount Kinabalu far inland. The crossing to the islands takes only around 20 to 30 minutes, which is why the marine park is the easiest Kota Kinabalu day trip by sea.
A catamaran is wider and more stable than a speedboat, so the ride is smoother and there is space to relax on deck or in the shade between activities. The afternoon session suits travellers who prefer a slower start to the day, and it ends with the sunset and the city lights. If you would rather be back by early afternoon, a morning session with lunch is also available.
Gaya Island and the Marine Park
Gaya Island is the largest island of the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, a protected group of islands just off the city that also includes Sapi, Manukan, Mamutik and Sulug. Its hills are covered in old rainforest that drops straight to the sea, and its sheltered bays have calm, clear water most of the year. Seeing the island from a catamaran gives you its forested coastline, small beaches and fishing settlements in one sweep.
The protection of the park means marine life around the islands is easy to observe close to the surface. The best time to visit the islands is from March to October, when seas are generally calmer and visibility is better; from November to February the north-east monsoon can bring rain and choppier water, and the crew may adjust the snorkelling spot to the most sheltered bay.
Snorkelling around Gaya Island
Snorkelling is the heart of the trip. The boat anchors over a reef area where you can float above hard and soft corals and see colourful reef fish such as sergeant majors, parrotfish and butterflyfish. Masks and snorkels are provided and life jackets are available for anyone who is not a confident swimmer, so even first-timers can enjoy the reef safely with the crew watching from the deck.
Fins are not included, so bring your own if you prefer them. Use reef-safe sunscreen and avoid touching or standing on the coral, which is alive and grows very slowly. Visibility is usually best in the afternoon on calm days, and the crew gives a short safety briefing before everyone enters the water.
Kayaking and Stand-Up Paddleboarding
After snorkelling, the kayaks and stand-up paddleboards come out. Paddling in the calm water off the island is a fun way to explore the shoreline at your own pace, and the crew helps beginners find their balance on the boards. Children and adults alike enjoy racing a kayak around the catamaran or trying to stand on a paddleboard for the first time.
The activities run on a guided schedule so everyone gets their turn, with time in between to rest on deck, rinse off and enjoy the view of Gaya Island's green slopes. Bring a towel and a change of clothes, as these are not provided, and a waterproof pouch for your phone if you want photos from the water.
Sunset Dinner Cruise and City Lights
As the afternoon turns golden, the catamaran starts its slow cruise back. Kota Kinabalu is famous for its sunsets over the South China Sea, and watching the sky turn orange and pink from the open deck is the highlight of this session. Dinner is served on board, so you can eat while the colours change over the islands.
After dark the city lights come on along the waterfront and the cruise becomes a short night trip across the bay before docking. You are then driven back to your hotel. Soft drinks and water can be bought or brought, and halal food is widely available in the city for those who want a snack before or after the trip.
