Full Description
Wat Chayamangkalaram: the Reclining Buddha of Penang
In the leafy suburb of Pulau Tikus, on Burma Lane, the Thai Buddhist temple of Wat Chayamangkalaram was founded in the mid-19th century. Its main hall shelters a golden Reclining Buddha about 33 metres long, completed in 1958 and among the longest in Southeast Asia. Behind the statue, niches hold the ashes of devotees, and the entrance is guarded by mythical serpents and colourful Thai guardian figures.
Plan about 30 minutes here. Shoes come off before the hall, and visitors are asked to keep shoulders and knees covered. The temple is usually open from morning to late afternoon, so the 09:00 start of this private tour reaches it while it is calm and cool. It is one of the most photographed sights on any Penang city tour, and children are often fascinated by the size of the statue.
Dhammikarama Burmese Temple
Directly opposite the Thai temple, the Dhammikarama Burmese Temple dates back to 1803 and is considered the oldest Buddhist temple in Penang. Its gateway is guarded by two large white elephant statues, and the grounds include a gilded stupa, a wishing pool and halls with standing Buddha images in the Burmese style.
Seeing the two temples side by side shows how Thai and Burmese communities settled in Penang and kept their traditions alive. The visit takes about 20 minutes and is easy on foot, as the gardens are flat and shaded. With a private driver waiting outside, you can take your time here and simply walk back to the vehicle when you are ready to move on.
Khoo Kongsi clan house
Khoo Kongsi, hidden behind Cannon Square in the heart of the heritage zone, is the grandest Chinese clan house in Malaysia. It was built by the Khoo clan, Hokkien merchants who arrived in Penang in the 19th century, and the main temple, Leong San Tong, was completed in 1906 after an earlier building burned down. Its roof ridges, beams and pillars are covered with gilded wood carvings, stone sculptures and painted door gods.
Your entry ticket is included. Inside the courtyard you find the opera stage facing the temple, and on the ground floor a small museum explains the history of the clan and its role in George Town. Plan 30 to 45 minutes. Khoo Kongsi opening hours are generally from morning to late afternoon, and the morning light on the facade makes the best photos.
Chew Jetty and the Clan Jetties
Along Weld Quay, on the eastern waterfront, wooden houses on stilts stretch out over the sea. These Clan Jetties were settled in the 19th century by Chinese families working in the port, and each jetty was traditionally home to one clan. Chew Jetty is the largest, with a long plank path, family altars, small shops and a little temple near the end.
People still live here, so the visit is quiet and respectful; allow 30 to 40 minutes. The jetty is part of the UNESCO heritage zone, and from its end you look back at the city and across the strait to the mainland. Many visitors ask how to get to Chew Jetty: it is a short drive from the old town centre, and on this private tour your driver drops you at the entrance.
Fort Cornwallis, the Esplanade and a coffee break
Fort Cornwallis stands at the north-eastern tip of the island, where the British East India Company landed in 1786. First built of palm trunks and rebuilt in brick and stone in the early 1800s, the star-shaped fort keeps its ramparts, old cannons and gunpowder magazine. Beside it, the Esplanade is framed by the white colonial Town Hall and City Hall, with a breezy seafront promenade.
Along the way you also enjoy a tasting of local coffee, a favourite Penang ritual, roasted and brewed the traditional way and served strong and fragrant. It is a good moment to rest before the tour ends. Since your vehicle is private, you can ask your driver to stop for extra photos on the waterfront before the drop-off at your hotel in central George Town.
