Full Description

Penang Hill funicular: the ride up Bukit Bendera

Penang Hill, Bukit Bendera in Malay, was the island's first hill station, where colonial officials escaped the heat from the late 18th century. The funicular railway from the lower station in Air Itam opened in 1923 and was modernised in 2011; today's trains climb one of the steepest funicular tracks in Asia, through tunnels and forest, in around five to ten minutes.

Your funicular ticket is included, so you skip the ticket counter and simply board with your driver-guide. The line runs daily from early morning until late evening, but queues build on weekends and public holidays, which is why a private Penang Hill tour with a planned time slot saves effort. Sit on the downhill side of the carriage for the best view as George Town falls away below you.

Penang Hill summit: cool air and island views

At more than 700 metres above sea level, the summit area is usually several degrees cooler than the city. Viewing terraces look over George Town, the Penang Bridge and, on clear days, the mountains of the mainland. Old colonial bungalows, flower gardens, a small mosque and a Hindu temple sit along the ridge, and there are stalls and cafés with halal snacks.

Allow about an hour at the top. Many guests ask about the best time to visit Penang Hill: early morning for clear air and quiet paths, or late afternoon for golden light over the city. On this private tour your driver-guide adapts the timing to your group, so you can linger at the viewpoints, take family photos and ride back down when you are ready.

Kek Lok Si Temple and the Pagoda of Ten Thousand Buddhas

Kek Lok Si, the Temple of Supreme Bliss, climbs the hillside of Air Itam in terraces of halls, gardens and prayer pavilions. Construction began in the 1890s, and it is considered the largest Buddhist temple in Malaysia. Its symbol is the seven-tier Pagoda of Ten Thousand Buddhas, completed in 1930, with an octagonal Chinese base, a Thai middle section and a Burmese crown, reflecting the different Buddhist traditions of the region.

Inside the pagoda, walls are lined with small Buddha images, and the upper balconies give views across Air Itam to Penang Hill. The pagoda has its own small entry ticket, not included. Plan around an hour for the temple. Is Kek Lok Si worth visiting? The mix of architecture, the turtle pond and the lively prayer halls make it one of Penang's most memorable stops.

The Kuan Yin statue and Air Itam

Above the main temple stands a bronze statue of Kuan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy, more than 30 metres tall and sheltered by an ornate pavilion. An inclined lift carries visitors up the slope to the statue terrace, with its own small ticket, and from there the views stretch over the green valley and the red-roofed halls below. During Chinese New Year the temple is lit with rows of lanterns in the evening.

The temple sits in Air Itam, a busy local town at the foot of Penang Hill, known for its morning market and street food. Kek Lok Si opening hours are generally from morning to late afternoon, which fits both start times of this private tour. Your driver-guide can suggest a halal lunch spot in town or nearby before taking you back to your hotel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this tour private?

Yes. The vehicle and the English-speaking driver-guide are only for your party; no other guests join.

Can we change the itinerary or the pace?

Yes, within the four hours. You can spend longer on the summit or at the temple, add photo stops or visit Kek Lok Si first; just tell your driver-guide.

How many people fit in the vehicle?

We send a private air-conditioned car or van suited to your group size; tell us how many travellers and any child seats you need when booking.

Is the price per person or per group?

The price is per person, with a lower rate for children aged 4 to 12. The booking panel on this page shows the current price for your date and group.

Is hotel pickup included?

Yes, round-trip transfers are included from hotels in George Town and Batu Ferringhi. Hotels in other areas can be served for an extra charge per car paid to the driver.

What is included?

A private English-speaking driver-guide, a private air-conditioned vehicle, the Penang Hill funicular ride, the visit to Kek Lok Si Temple and round-trip hotel transfers in George Town and Batu Ferringhi. Food, drinks and tips are not included.

How long is the tour?

About 4 hours, starting at 09:00 or 14:00.

Is it suitable for children or travellers with reduced mobility?

Children love the funicular and the temple's turtle pond. The funicular and summit are fairly accessible, but Kek Lok Si has many steps and slopes, so guests with limited mobility should tell us in advance so we can plan the visit.

What should I bring?

Comfortable shoes, modest clothing, a light jacket for the summit, sunscreen, water, a camera and some cash for the pagoda ticket, the inclined lift and snacks.

What is the best time of day or season?

The 09:00 start usually brings the clearest views and shorter queues; the 14:00 start ends in softer light. December to March is generally the driest period in Penang. During Chinese New Year Kek Lok Si is decorated with lanterns, but it is also busier.

How do I get to Penang Hill and Kek Lok Si on my own?

Both are in Air Itam, about 20–30 minutes by road from central George Town. This private tour removes the planning: we drive you to the lower station, the funicular ticket is ready, and the temple is a short drive away.

How do I book and confirm?
