Full Description
Climbing from Ipoh into the highlands
A Cameron Highlands day trip from Ipoh is the shortest way to reach Malaysia's favourite hill station: the Simpang Pulai road climbs from the limestone hills around Ipoh to the highland farms in about 1.5 to 2 hours. The route passes jungle-covered ridges, small Orang Asli settlements and, higher up, the vegetable valleys of Kampung Raja and Tringkap, where greenhouses cover the slopes like white terraces.
Because this is a private tour, our driver stops wherever the view is best and keeps the drive relaxed on the many bends. The difference in climate is striking: Ipoh is often above 30°C, while the highland towns sit at around 1,400 to 1,600 metres and stay between about 15 and 25°C all year. Bring a jacket for the afternoon showers and the cooler air.
The tea plantations
Tea is the signature of the Cameron Highlands, grown here since the late 1920s on hills so steep the bushes seem to be combed across them. The best-known estate, Sungai Palas north of Brinchang, has a tea centre with a terrace looking over a sweeping green valley, while the estates along the main road near Ringlet have tea houses right above the terraces.
Your driver chooses the plantation that suits the day: Sungai Palas is closed on Mondays, and on busy weekends a quieter estate can be more pleasant. Plan about 45 minutes to an hour at each tea stop to walk to the viewpoints, take photos among the bushes and sit down with a cup of fresh highland tea at your own expense.
Strawberry farms and Kea Farm
The cool climate lets farmers here grow strawberries all year, mostly in raised beds under clear shelters that protect the fruit from the frequent rain. A stop at a strawberry farm lets you see how the plants are grown and pick your own if you wish, with the fruit paid by weight. Children in particular love this part of the day.
Around Kea Farm and Brinchang a busy roadside market sells strawberries, corn, highland vegetables, honey, flowers and souvenirs, and it is a good place for a snack. If you are interested, ask your driver about other stops in the area such as the butterfly and insect gardens or the hilltop Buddhist temple above Brinchang, time permitting.
Rose and flower gardens
Flowers are the other great crop of the Cameron Highlands. Terraced gardens around Brinchang and Kea Farm grow roses, chrysanthemums, fuchsias, cactus and orchids, and many are open to visitors with paths climbing up the hillside to viewpoints over the town. They are colourful at any time of year and make a calm, scented break between the farm visits.
Entry to the rose and orchid gardens is paid at the gate and is not included. Allow about 30 to 45 minutes to stroll through and take photos; the higher terraces involve some steps, but the lower beds are easy to enjoy. Many gardens also sell plants and seeds, though most cannot be carried across borders.
Tanah Rata and the viewpoints
Tanah Rata is the main town of the Cameron Highlands, a pleasant street of cafés, restaurants and small shops around a green park. It is the most convenient place for lunch, and there are many halal restaurants along with a mosque in town, so travellers of all backgrounds find what they need. Lunch is not included, which leaves you free to choose a place you like.
Along the way your driver points out viewpoints over the valleys and the farms, and shares stories about life in the highlands. What is the best time to visit the Cameron Highlands? The mornings are usually clear and the afternoons bring mist or rain, and February to April tends to be the driest period of the year.
