Full Description
George Town Heritage Zone
Most private Penang tours start in George Town, the old British port listed by UNESCO in 2008 for its living mix of Chinese, Malay, Indian and European heritage. Your driver can drop you at the Clan Jetties, where families live in wooden houses on stilts over the sea, near the Khoo Kongsi clan temple, or along Armenian Street and its famous murals, then meet you a few streets further on so you never have to walk back.
Do not miss the Street of Harmony, where the Kapitan Keling Mosque, a Chinese temple, a Hindu temple and an Anglican church stand side by side, or the colonial waterfront with Fort Cornwallis and the City Hall. Parking in the old town is tight, so a private car with a driver who knows the lanes saves a great deal of time.
Penang Hill (Bukit Bendera)
Penang Hill rises to about 830 metres in the middle of the island and has been a cool escape since colonial days. From the lower station in Air Itam the funicular climbs to the summit in a few minutes, and from the top you see George Town, the bridges to the mainland and the Straits beyond. On the summit there are gardens, old bungalows, a small mosque, a Hindu temple and The Habitat, a rainforest park with a canopy walk.
Funicular and attraction tickets are not included, so you buy only what you want to do. Our tip: go early, as queues grow from late morning and clouds often gather in the afternoon. Your driver waits at the base station while you spend one to two hours on top.
Kek Lok Si Temple
A short drive from Penang Hill, Kek Lok Si spreads across a hillside above Air Itam and is the largest Buddhist temple complex in Malaysia. Its seven-storey pagoda mixes Chinese, Thai and Burmese styles, and an inclined lift carries visitors up to a towering bronze statue of Kuan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy, set beneath a carved pavilion with wide views over the valley.
Allow about an hour for the halls, ponds and terraces. Shoulders and knees should be covered, and there are many steps between levels. Combining Penang Hill and Kek Lok Si in the same morning is easy with a private driver, and Air Itam below the temple is the place to try assam laksa, the island's famous sour fish noodle soup.
Batu Ferringhi and the North Coast
The coastal road north of George Town winds past Tanjung Bungah, where the Tanjung Bungah Floating Mosque stands on stilts over the rocks and the sea, one of the most photographed mosques on the island. Further on lies Batu Ferringhi, Penang's best-known beach strip, with soft sand, water sports and a lively evening market along the main road.
A private tour lets you stop for a swim or a coconut by the sea, then continue at your own pace. If you start your day after lunch, you can end it here with sunset over the Andaman Sea and dinner in one of the many halal restaurants along the coast before your driver takes you back to your hotel.
Teluk Bahang and Penang National Park
At the north-western tip of the island, the fishing village of Teluk Bahang is the gateway to Penang National Park, one of the smallest national parks in the world, with rainforest, a canopy walkway and quiet beaches reached by boat or by forest trail. Nearby are some of the island's most popular family attractions: a butterfly and nature park, an outdoor adventure and water park, and a tropical spice garden.
How to get to Penang National Park without a car is a common question, as public transport is slow; with a private driver it takes about 40 minutes from George Town. Entrance tickets and boat rides are paid separately, so you can choose freely between nature, adventure and relaxation.
Balik Pulau and the West Coast
Beyond the hills on the western side of the island, Balik Pulau feels a world away from the city. The road climbs through forest and orchards where nutmeg, clove and the island's prized durians grow, then descends to green paddy fields, Malay villages and fishing jetties on the quiet coast. Roadside stalls sell nutmeg juice and local fruit in season.
Returning via the south of the island, you can see the Penang Bridge and the longer Second Penang Bridge stretching across the channel to the mainland, and stop near the airport area if you have an evening flight. Is a full-day island tour of Penang worth it? With eight hours and a car of your own, you see the city, the hills, the beaches and the countryside in a single relaxed day.
