Overview
Entopia is a butterfly garden and nature discovery centre in Teluk Bahang, on the north-west coast of Penang Island, close to Penang National Park. It grew from the island's original butterfly farm into a modern indoor-outdoor attraction where thousands of free-flying butterflies share a lush tropical garden with ponds, waterfalls and flowering plants. Full Description
The Butterfly Garden
The heart of Entopia is its outdoor tropical garden, a large netted enclosure filled with nectar flowers, host plants, streams, small waterfalls and fish ponds. Butterflies flutter freely all around you: large golden birdwings, black and white paper kites drifting slowly through the air, iridescent blue species and many more from Malaysia and the wider region. Many land on flowers at eye level, and sometimes on visitors too.
Look out for the emergence area, where rows of chrysalises hang and you may see a butterfly unfolding its wings for the first time. The garden is warmest and most active on sunny mornings, when butterflies feed and fly most. Is Entopia worth visiting? For families and photographers, few places in Malaysia let you get so close to so many butterflies.
The Indoor Discovery Centre
Beyond the garden, an indoor discovery centre is designed to show how small creatures live and why they matter. Interactive exhibits, magnified views and living displays introduce stick and leaf insects, beetles, scorpions, spiders, frogs and reptiles, many of them so well camouflaged that you need a second look to find them.
Children can follow the trail of displays at their own pace, touch and explore hands-on exhibits and learn about the life cycle from egg to caterpillar to butterfly. The air-conditioned centre is also a welcome break from the tropical heat and a good plan for a rainy afternoon, as most of the indoor visit is unaffected by the weather.
Nature Learning Activities
General admission includes the scheduled nature learning activities that run through the day. These short sessions, led by staff, may include feeding demonstrations, close-up encounters with insects or talks about butterfly breeding and conservation. Check the schedule at the entrance when you arrive so you can plan your route around the sessions that interest your family.
Entopia also offers private guided tours at extra cost, but the signs, exhibits and activities included in this ticket give a rich visit on their own. Allow about two to three hours to enjoy the garden, the indoor centre and one or two activities without rushing; families with curious children often stay longer. The sessions are especially popular with school-age children.
How to Get to Entopia and Plan Your Day

Entopia opening hours are 09:00 to 17:00, and it is closed on Wednesdays.
