Overview
The Habitat is a rainforest nature park on the summit of Penang Hill, about 800 metres above sea level and a short walk from the upper funicular station. With this standard entry ticket you explore at your own pace along shaded nature trails through ancient lowland forest, cross a canopy bridge high above the ground, climb the Curtis Crest treetop walk to Penang's highest public viewing platform and swing out over the jungle on giant forest swings. Along the way, interpretive signs explain the plants, animals and history of the hill. It is a cool, green escape from George Town that suits families, couples and nature lovers, and it combines easily with a day on Penang Hill.

Full Description
The Rainforest Trails of Penang Hill
The Habitat protects a patch of rainforest on the upper slopes of Penang Hill that is often described as around 130 million years old, far older than the Amazon. A network of about 1.6 kilometres of trails and boardwalks leads beneath giant dipterocarp trees, past strangler figs, wild orchids, pitcher plants and tree ferns, with signs that explain how the forest works and why it matters for the island's water and climate.
Part of the route follows an old trail used in the British colonial era to reach the hilltop bungalows. The paths are well maintained but include slopes and steps, so comfortable shoes help. Allow two to three hours to enjoy the trails, the treetop walk and the swings without hurrying, and more if you like to stop and look for wildlife.
Curtis Crest Treetop Walk and the Canopy Bridge
The highlight for most visitors is Curtis Crest, a treetop walk that spirals up to the highest public viewing platform on Penang Island. From the top the view opens in every direction: George Town and the Straits to the east, the Penang Bridge reaching to the mainland, the forested ridges of the island and, on clear days, the Andaman Sea and the islands to the north.
Nearby, a long two-span canopy bridge carries you through the treetops, about 40 metres above the forest floor, with views straight down into the green layers of the rainforest. Giant forest swings complete the experience and are a favourite with children and photographers. Some sections may close briefly for maintenance, so follow the signs on the day.
Wildlife of the Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve
Penang Hill and its surroundings were recognised as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2021, and The Habitat is one of the best places to experience that biodiversity. Dusky leaf monkeys with white-ringed eyes, giant black squirrels, colugos gliding between trees and many species of birds, butterflies and lizards live in the forest. Morning visits usually bring the most activity and birdsong.
Sightings are never guaranteed, and animals should never be fed. Move quietly, scan the canopy and watch the trunks for well-camouflaged insects and reptiles. The park offers guided eco-tours at extra cost, but the signs along the trails make the standard self-guided visit rewarding on its own.
How to Get to The Habitat and Plan Your Visit
The Habitat entrance is on the summit of Penang Hill, a short walk from the upper station of the funicular railway that climbs from Air Itam. The funicular ride is not included in this ticket, and queues can last from fifteen minutes to an hour on busy days, so start early. The Habitat opening hours run from 09:00; with the standard ticket, last admission is at 17:30 and all standard visitors must exit by 19:00.
Re-entry is not allowed once you leave. Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is the ticket dated or timed?
The ticket is valid on the date you select, with entry any time from opening until the last standard admission at 17:30. There is no fixed time slot.
Is the Penang Hill funicular included?
No. The funicular from Air Itam to the summit is bought separately. Plan extra time for the queue, especially on weekends.
What is included?
Self-guided entry to The Habitat Penang Hill, including the rainforest nature trails, the Curtis Crest treetop walk and viewing platform, the canopy bridge and the giant forest swings.
Is the price per person or per group?
The ticket is priced per person. Children up to 3 years enter without a ticket. The booking panel on this page shows the current price.
How long should we spend at The Habitat?
Most visitors spend 2 to 3 hours. Add time for the funicular and for the other sights on the summit of Penang Hill.
Is it suitable for children or guests with reduced mobility?
Children love the swings and the canopy bridge. The trails include steps and slopes, so the park is not suitable for wheelchair users, and visitors aged 17 and under must be with a parent.
What are the opening hours?
The park opens at 09:00. With the standard ticket, last admission is at 17:30 and you must exit by 19:00. Later entry requires a separate evening ticket.
Will we see wildlife?
Dusky leaf monkeys, giant squirrels and many birds live here, and mornings are usually best, but sightings are never guaranteed.
What should I bring?
Comfortable shoes, water, insect repellent, a light rain jacket and a camera. The summit is cooler than George Town, so a light layer can help in the evening.
What is the best time to visit?
A weekday morning is quietest, with clear views and active wildlife. December to March is usually the driest season; afternoon clouds and showers are more common later in the year.
How do I book and confirm?
Choose your date and the number of tickets in the booking panel. Our team confirms your booking on WhatsApp within minutes.
