Full Description

Tropical Fruit Farm Penang: a living fruit collection

The Tropical Fruit Farm was established in 1993 on a hillside about 240 metres above sea level, on the winding road between Teluk Bahang and Balik Pulau. Its terraced orchards cover around 25 acres and gather hundreds of fruit varieties, from local favourites such as rambutan, mangosteen, durian and jackfruit to rarer species from South America, Africa and the Pacific.

The farm was created to conserve rare fruit trees and to show visitors how tropical agriculture works, which makes it more of a living fruit museum than a simple orchard. Many travellers ask whether the Tropical Fruit Farm in Penang is worth visiting: for families, curious eaters and anyone who has wondered what a soursop, star fruit or miracle berry really tastes like, it is one of the most rewarding stops on the island.

Guided orchard tour and tastings

Your ticket includes a guided tour in English of about 30 minutes. The guide leads you along shaded paths between the trees, points out fruits in season, explains how each grows and shares tips on choosing and eating them. You also learn how fruit enzymes are made by fermenting fruit with sugar, a traditional health drink in the region.

The tour ends with tastings of cinnamon and lemongrass tea, fruit enzyme and wild honey. With the default option you also receive a plate of fresh seasonal fruit and a glass of pure fruit juice, a refreshing finish on a warm day. Fruits change through the year: the main durian and mangosteen season in Penang is roughly June to August, but the plate always features what is ripe on the farm.

How to get to the Tropical Fruit Farm and planning your visit

The farm lies inland from Teluk Bahang village, about 15 to 20 minutes by car from Batu Ferringhi and around 45 minutes to an hour from George Town. Public buses reach Teluk Bahang, but the last stretch climbs a steep hill road, so most visitors come by taxi, e-hailing car or private transfer. Transfers are not included with this ticket; we can arrange a private transfer on request.

Guided tours start at 09:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00, and the whole visit takes about one and a half hours with the fruit plate. Morning tours are cooler and the fruit is freshest. Wear comfortable shoes, as the paths slope and can be muddy after rain, and bring an umbrella or a hat. Outside food and drinks are not allowed on the farm.

Around Teluk Bahang: national park, beaches and Balik Pulau

Teluk Bahang is the gateway to Penang National Park, a protected area of rainforest and quiet beaches at the island's north-west tip, and it sits just beyond the resort strip of Batu Ferringhi with its long sandy beach. Nearby you also find a batik workshop and an indoor butterfly and insect park, which makes this corner of Penang an easy full-day outing with children.

Continuing south over the hill, the road reaches Balik Pulau, a rural district of durian and nutmeg orchards, paddy fields and fishing villages, very different from busy George Town. Halal food is easy to find in Teluk Bahang village and in Balik Pulau, where many small eateries serve local Malay dishes. A visit to the fruit farm fits naturally into a day of exploring the green side of Penang.
