Full Description
Batu Caves and the Golden Statue
Batu Caves is a limestone hill about 13 kilometres north of central Kuala Lumpur, in the Gombak district of Selangor, and has been a Hindu shrine since the late 19th century. At its foot stands the golden statue of Lord Murugan, over 42 metres tall, one of the largest of its kind anywhere. Beside it, 272 steps painted in rainbow colours climb the cliff to the caves.
Is Batu Caves worth visiting? Yes, it is the most striking cultural site near the capital and easy to combine with nature. Long-tailed macaques roam the steps, so keep food and sunglasses out of reach and never feed them. The best time to visit Batu Caves is the morning, before the heat and the crowds build, which is why this tour starts at 09:00.
Temple Cave
The climb to Temple Cave takes 10 to 15 minutes. Inside, a huge cavern with a ceiling around 100 metres high is lit by shafts of daylight, with shrines and sculptures where devotees bring offerings. A second chamber at the back is open to the sky, ringed by vertical limestone walls covered in tropical plants.
Batu Caves opening hours run from early morning until evening every day, and entry to Temple Cave is free. Each year in January or February the Thaipusam festival brings enormous numbers of pilgrims. Visitors need to cover their knees; sarongs can be rented at the foot of the steps, and shoes are removed where signs ask in the shrines.
Ramayana Cave
Near the entrance to the site, Ramayana Cave is guarded by a tall green statue of Hanuman, the monkey deity. Inside, colourful sculptures and dioramas lit in bright tones tell the story of the Ramayana, one of the great Hindu epics, along a winding path through the cave. The scenes of gods, heroes and demons are vivid and easy to follow, making this a favourite with children.
Entry to Ramayana Cave is included in this tour. The visit takes about 20 to 30 minutes and involves only a few steps, so it is a good option for travellers who prefer not to climb the main staircase. Your driver-guide explains the main characters and how the epic is celebrated in Hindu communities across Malaysia.
Kanching Waterfall, Rawang
Kanching Recreational Forest lies in Rawang, about 20 to 30 minutes north of Batu Caves, and is one of the closest rainforest waterfalls to Kuala Lumpur. A chain of falls cascades down the hillside through tall jungle trees, with clear, cool pools at the foot of the lower tiers where visitors swim and children paddle. Trails climb to higher falls for those with more energy.
Many travellers ask how to get to Kanching Waterfall without a car; public transport is limited, so a Batu Caves and Kanching Waterfall day trip from Kuala Lumpur is the easy way. You have about an hour and a half here. Bring swimwear, a towel and shoes with grip, as rocks are slippery. The falls are fullest after rain, but swimming may be stopped when water levels are high.
