Full Description
Ferry to Amsterdam Noord and the D'Admiraal windmill
The tour leaves the bike shop by the Amsterdam Cruise Terminal and heads to the IJ for the short ferry crossing to Amsterdam Noord, passing the A'DAM Tower and the angular white film museum on the north bank. Within minutes of landing, the city gives way to quieter streets, canals and parks, a contrast that surprises most visitors on a first countryside bike tour from Amsterdam.
The first stop is the D'Admiraal windmill, a tall stage mill built in 1792 beside the North Holland Canal, one of the last remaining windmills within the city limits. The guide explains how mills like this ground materials for industry and kept the low land dry, and how the Dutch reclaimed polders from the water. It is a 10-minute photo stop before the route continues into open country.
The Waterland countryside and Broek in Waterland
North of the city lies Waterland, a protected landscape of peat meadows, narrow ditches, dykes and grazing cows, little changed for centuries. Cycling here on an e-bike is effortless, on paved paths with almost no cars, and the guide stops to explain how the land is managed with pumping stations and why the meadows are so green.
The route reaches Broek in Waterland, a village where wealthy merchants and ship owners built elegant wooden houses in the 17th and 18th centuries. Many are painted in soft grey and pastel tones and stand around small ponds and canals, with a white wooden church at their heart. The 15-minute stop gives time to walk among the houses, one of the prettiest village scenes in North Holland.
Monnickendam, the old harbour town
The ride continues to Monnickendam, a small historic town on the shore of the Markermeer that received city rights in the 14th century and grew rich on fishing and trade. Its old centre is full of gabled houses and narrow streets, and its landmark is the Speeltoren, a slender bell tower with a carillon whose figures of knights move when the bells ring the hour.
The harbour, lined with traditional wooden sailing boats, is still the heart of the town, and Monnickendam is known for smoked fish, especially eel, prepared in local smokehouses for generations. The guide stops here for about 10 minutes, a chance to photograph the harbour and hear the history of the fishing communities around the former inland sea.
The cheese farm at Katwoude
A few minutes away lies Katwoude, a tiny hamlet with a traditional farm that makes its own cheese from local milk. During this 30-minute visit you see how cheese is produced, from curdling the milk to pressing the curd into wheels and ageing them, and you can taste as many of the farm's cheeses as you like, from young and mild to aged and flavoured with herbs or cumin.
The farm also displays traditional wooden clogs, still worn by farmers in the wet polder fields, and shows how they are made. It is the highlight of the day for many riders and the best place to buy cheese, which can be vacuum-packed for travel. Cafe purchases are not included, but water bottles can usually be refilled.
Zunderdorp and the ride back to Amsterdam
On the return, the route passes Zunderdorp, one of the small dyke villages of the rural north of Amsterdam, with a church, a few streets of wooden and brick houses and wide views over the meadows. Although it lies within the city's borders, it feels a world away from the centre, and it shows how close the countryside is to the capital.
From here the group rides back to the ferry and across the IJ to the bike shop on Piet Heinkade, about four hours after setting out. The total distance is designed to be comfortable on an e-bike, with plenty of stops. Is this countryside tour worth it compared with a bus trip? On a bike you see the landscape at its own pace and reach places coaches cannot.
