Overview
This small-group day tour from Faro, limited to eight people, swaps the boat for your own two feet and shows the Algarve coast from the clifftops. An air-conditioned van takes you to the fishing village of Benagil, where you look down into the famous cave through the hole in its roof before walking to the beach. An English-speaking local guide then leads you along the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail past Elephant Rock, a mini canyon and hidden coves to Praia da Marinha, where you have an hour and a half to swim and relax. The day ends at the rock galleries of Algar Seco and Boneca Cave near Carvoeiro. It suits active adults and teenagers aged twelve and over. There is no hotel pickup: we meet in central Faro.

Full Description
Faro, the gateway to the Algarve
Faro is the capital of the Algarve and the first stop for most visitors, thanks to its airport. Behind its marina lies the walled Vila Adentro, the old town entered through the arched Arco da Vila, with a cathedral, cobbled squares and storks nesting on the rooftops. To the south stretches the Ria Formosa, a lagoon of islands, salt pans and channels protected as a natural park.
Our day trip starts by the large heart-shaped sign near the marina in the centre, easy to reach on foot from the old town and the main streets. From here the van drives about 45 minutes west to the municipality of Lagoa, where the most spectacular stretch of cliffs begins. It is one of the best things to do in Faro if you want to see the coast without spending the whole day on the road.
Benagil village and the view into Benagil Cave
Benagil is a small fishing village above a narrow cove, with boats on the sand and a road winding down between the cliffs. The famous Benagil Cave lies just east of the beach: a large chamber carved by the sea, whose collapsed roof left a round opening known locally as the algar.
On this tour you walk through the village to the clifftop viewpoint that looks straight down through that opening onto the beach inside the cave, a view few boat passengers ever see. Then you descend to Benagil Beach, where the guide explains how the caves formed before the hike begins. The tour does not include a boat ride into the cave, so this is a Faro day trip to Benagil for those who prefer solid ground.
The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail
The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail runs along the clifftops between Praia da Marinha and Praia de Vale Centeanes, and is often named among the most beautiful coastal walks in Europe. Its name comes from small valleys that end abruptly at the cliff edge, left hanging as the sea ate away the coast faster than the streams could cut down.
Our guided hike covers the section between Benagil and Marinha, about an hour and three quarters with photo stops. You pass above Praia da Corredoura, see Elephant Rock reaching into the sea, walk through a mini canyon and look down on Praia da Mesquita and the heart-shaped opening known as the Secret Heart. The path is uneven with some short climbs, and the guide shares facts about the plants, birds and geology of the coast.
Praia da Marinha
Praia da Marinha is regularly listed among the finest beaches in the world, and it lives up to the praise. A stairway leads down from the clifftop car park to golden sand framed by tall stacks, a double arch and water so clear you can see the rocks on the bottom. At low tide you can explore small caves and pools at either end.
After the hike you have an hour and a half of free time here to swim, rest and have lunch. Food trucks and a restaurant operate only in summer, so outside that season bring your own food. Is Praia da Marinha worth visiting? For many travellers it is the highlight of the Algarve, and walking to it along the cliffs makes the first swim even better.
Algar Seco and Boneca Cave near Carvoeiro
Algar Seco lies just east of Carvoeiro, where waves and wind have shaped the limestone into a maze of arches, galleries, pools and natural bridges. Steps and walkways lead down through the formations, and the guide points out fossils set in the rock and tells the legends attached to the place.
Within Algar Seco is Boneca Cave, whose two openings frame the ocean like windows; its name means doll, after a rock said to resemble one. It is a favourite photo stop and, when the sea is calm, a place to swim. Confident swimmers can also try a cliff jump into deep water if conditions allow, always with the guide's support and at their own choice. If access is restricted, the guide visits an alternative beach.
