Full Description

Garajau Nature Reserve

The Garajau Nature Reserve is a protected marine area on the coast between Funchal and Caniço, set up to protect the sea life in the shallow waters below the cliffs. Fishing is restricted inside the reserve, so the fish are unusually relaxed around swimmers, and it is one of the most popular places for snorkelling near Funchal.

You can expect shoals of fish such as sea bream, damselfish and wrasse, with volcanic rock formations underneath. What you see depends on the day and the conditions, and nothing is guaranteed, but the clear water makes it a good answer for beginners asking where to snorkel in Madeira.

Sea kayaking along the coast

The tour follows the coast in a sea kayak, paddling along the base of steep cliffs and past small rocky inlets, in a group led by your guide. Before you start there is a safety briefing and some paddling tips, so you do not need previous experience, only a willingness to paddle for a while.

Water for each kayak and a waterproof phone case are included so you can take photos from the sea. A kayak seat upgrade is optional and paid for locally. Seen from the water, the cliffs and the hillsides above look much more dramatic than from the road.

Snorkelling stop and what to bring

Mid-tour the group stops in calm water for snorkelling, with a mask provided. You should be comfortable swimming and floating, and it helps to bring your own swimwear, a rash vest or a T-shirt for sun protection, and a towel for afterwards. The sea can be cool, even in summer.

Sun protection matters on the water, so bring sunscreen suitable for the sea and a hat if you like. The booking includes a mask, so if you prefer your own fins or snorkel, feel free to bring them. Take care to follow the guide's instructions in the water and stay close to the group at all times.

Meeting point, timing and practical details

The tour lasts about three hours, with morning and afternoon departures, and the booking panel shows the times available on your date. The meeting point is at the starting location, confirmed in your booking voucher, and hotel pickup is not included.

Food is not included, so have a snack beforehand or plan to eat afterwards, and drink water before you set off. If the sea is too rough, the tour may be adjusted or cancelled for safety, and we contact you with options. Arriving ten minutes early makes check-in and the briefing easier.
