Full Description

Departure from Ribeira, Porto

The day begins at Cais da Estiva, on the riverside of Ribeira, the old quarter of Porto at the foot of the UNESCO-listed historic centre. Here the colourful houses rise above the quay and the traditional rabelo boats rock gently at their moorings, while the Dom Luís I Bridge spans the river overhead.

As the boat leaves the city it passes beneath the bridges of Porto, from Dom Luís I to Maria Pia and Freixo, and breakfast is served on board while the urban landscape gives way to green hills. This first part of the Douro River cruise from Porto is a gentle introduction to the river that shaped the history and economy of northern Portugal.

Crestuma-Lever Dam

About an hour upstream, the boat reaches the Crestuma-Lever Dam, the first of the dams built to make the Douro navigable and to produce electricity. Its lock raises the boat by around 14 metres, and watching the gates close and the water level rise is a fascinating experience for adults and children alike.

Beyond the dam, the river widens into a calm reservoir surrounded by wooded slopes, small villages and river beaches. Your audio guide explains how the dams tamed what was once a wild and dangerous river, full of rapids, where boatmen risked their lives carrying goods down to Porto. Today the calm water is a paradise for birds such as herons and cormorants, which you may spot along the banks.

Carrapatelo Dam, one of Europe's highest river locks

The most spectacular moment of the day is the passage through the Carrapatelo Dam. Its lock lifts the boat about 35 metres, one of the highest river locks in Europe. As the boat enters the deep concrete chamber, the walls tower above the deck, and slowly the water carries you up until the valley appears again at the top.

Lunch is served on board around this part of the trip, so you can enjoy a traditional Portuguese meal while the scenery becomes ever more dramatic. The tour guide on board and the audio commentary add stories about the villages, churches and manor houses you pass along the banks. Keep your camera ready for the moment the upper gates open.

The Douro Valley landscape

Above Carrapatelo, the river enters the landscape that made the Douro famous. Steep hillsides are carved into thousands of narrow terraces held up by dry-stone walls, built by hand over centuries and planted with vines and olive and almond trees. In 2001 UNESCO listed the Alto Douro landscape as a World Heritage Site for this exceptional work of people and nature together.

Seen from the river, the terraces form patterns of green and gold that change with the seasons: bright green in spring, deep green in summer and red and copper in autumn. Is a Douro Valley cruise worth it? For many visitors it is the most memorable day trip from Porto, and travelling upstream by boat is the most relaxing way to discover the valley.

Peso da Régua and the return to Porto

In the afternoon the boat arrives at Peso da Régua, the main town of the lower Douro valley and historically the centre of the region's river trade. Its long riverside promenade, the bridges across the Douro and the Douro Museum, dedicated to the history and landscape of the valley, are all close to the quay.

You have about 45 minutes of free time to stretch your legs, walk along the river or have a coffee before boarding the bus or train back to Porto, a journey of about 1.5 hours. If you are planning a Douro Valley day trip from Porto that combines a river cruise, meals and comfortable transport, this upstream route offers the complete experience in one day.
