Overview

This small-group cruise shows Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia from the water in an intimate way. Starting from the fishing village of Afurada, you spend two hours on the Douro River with a local guide and never more than 10 guests, passing beneath the city's great bridges, from the concrete arch of Arrábida to the iron Dom Luís I Bridge and the railway bridges upstream, with the colourful houses of Ribeira rising above the river. A welcome refreshment is served on board, blankets keep you warm on cooler days and a covered boat is used when it rains. The default option is a shared daytime cruise; a sunset version heads out to the river mouth and the Atlantic, and both routes can also be booked privately.

Full Description

Afurada and Vila Nova de Gaia

The cruise begins at Marina da Afurada, on the Gaia side of the Douro near the river mouth. Afurada is a traditional fishing village where washing still hangs between the houses and the smell of grilled sardines drifts from the small family restaurants. It is a quiet, authentic starting point, about 10 minutes by taxi from central Porto.

Vila Nova de Gaia is the city facing Porto across the river. Its riverside is lined with old stone lodges and moored rabelo boats, the flat-bottomed wooden boats that once carried barrels down the Douro. From the water you appreciate how the two cities face each other, linked by bridges that are among the finest examples of engineering in Europe.

The Arrábida Bridge

Heading upstream, the first great bridge is the Arrábida Bridge, opened in 1963. Its single concrete arch spans the whole river in one leap, and when it was built it was the largest concrete arch bridge in the world. Today it is a national monument, and adventurous visitors can even climb the top of its arch on a guided walk.

Seen from a small boat passing underneath, the bridge seems enormous, framing the river and the hills of Porto and Gaia on either side. Your guide explains how the bridge transformed traffic in the city and points out the grand houses and gardens on the slopes along the way. It is one of the best photo moments of any Porto bridges cruise.

Ribeira and the Dom Luís I Bridge

The heart of the cruise is the stretch in front of Ribeira, the old riverside quarter of Porto, part of the historic centre listed by UNESCO in 1996. Tall, narrow houses painted in ochre, blue and red climb the hillside above the quay, crowned by the towers of the cathedral and the old city walls.

Here the boat passes under the Dom Luís I Bridge, the symbol of Porto. Completed in 1886, this iron arch bridge has two decks: the lower one for cars and pedestrians at river level, the upper one carrying the metro and a walkway high above the water. On the Gaia side, the Serra do Pilar monastery watches over the scene from its hilltop, a perfect backdrop for photos.

Maria Pia and the bridges upstream

Further upstream, the river narrows between steep banks and the bridges keep coming. The Maria Pia Bridge, an elegant wrought-iron railway bridge from 1877, was a technical marvel of its time; it no longer carries trains, but its delicate arch remains one of the most beautiful sights on the river. Beside it stands the modern São João Bridge, which replaced it for railway traffic.

The route also takes in the Infante Dom Henrique Bridge, with its slim concrete deck high above the water, and on clear days you see the Freixo Bridge further upstream. Your guide tells the story of each crossing, from the old boat bridge that once linked the two banks to the modern spans, before the boat turns back towards Afurada.

Foz do Douro and the sunset option

On the way back, or on the sunset departure, the boat continues past Afurada towards Foz do Douro, where the river meets the Atlantic. Foz is an elegant seaside district with a long promenade, an old lighthouse and stone breakwaters where the waves crash in winter.

The sunset cruise heads out towards the estuary and the open ocean for golden-hour views, and with luck dolphins appear near the river mouth. Depending on availability it runs on a motor yacht or a sailboat, with the same two-hour route and small group. What is the best time to take a Douro River cruise in Porto? Spring to autumn offers the softest light, but blankets and a covered boat make the trip pleasant all year.
