Full Description
The Roman Aqueduct of Segovia
The Aqueduct of Segovia is the symbol of the city and one of the best-preserved Roman engineering works in the world. Built around the end of the 1st century AD, it carried water from the Frío river in the mountains into the town, and its tallest section, at Plaza del Azoguejo, rises about 28 metres on two tiers of granite arches. Remarkably, the blocks are held together without any mortar, only by the balance of the stones.
The day starts here after about 75 minutes on the coach from Madrid. Your guide leads a 30-minute walk along the aqueduct and up into the old town, explaining how the water channel worked until modern times. The best photos are from the steps beside the arches, and this is the moment many travellers call the highlight of any Segovia day trip from Madrid.
Segovia Cathedral and the old town
From the aqueduct the walk climbs Calle Real to Plaza Mayor, where the golden pinnacles of Segovia Cathedral rise above the rooftops. Built between 1525 and the late 16th century, it is one of the last great Gothic cathedrals raised in Spain, and its elegant silhouette earned it the nickname 'the Lady of Cathedrals'. The tour stops outside for photos and the guide's story of the building.
You then have about an hour of free time in the old town to wander its arcaded streets, Romanesque churches and palaces with façades decorated in diamond-pointed stonework. It is a good moment to buy local sweets or simply sit in Plaza Mayor. Segovia sits at about 1,000 metres, so bring a layer even in spring.
The Alcázar of Segovia
At the western tip of the old town, the Alcázar of Segovia stands on a rocky spur above the meeting of the Eresma and Clamores rivers, its slate-capped towers looking like the prow of a ship. Begun as a fortress in the 12th century, it became a favourite royal residence of the kings of Castile and was rebuilt in its present romantic form after a fire in 1862.
The tour stops here for photos from the gardens and lookouts around the castle, with time to admire the views over the valley and the Castilian plains. The interior is not part of this day trip, but your guide explains its history, from royal palace to artillery academy. On clear days the Guadarrama mountains frame the view to the south.
The Walls of Ávila
About an hour west of Segovia, Ávila is the highest provincial capital in Spain, at around 1,130 metres, and is famous for having the most complete medieval walls in the country. Built mainly between the 11th and 12th centuries, the granite walls run for about 2.5 km around the old town, with dozens of rounded towers and nine gates. The apse of Ávila Cathedral is built into the wall itself, half church and half fortress.
Your guide leads a one-hour walk along a stretch of the walls and through the old town towards the cathedral. Then comes lunch: on the default option you sit down to a traditional Iberian meal at a local restaurant in the old town, about an hour, in one of the most atmospheric settings of the day. Please tell us about any dietary needs when you book.
Toledo old town and the panoramic viewpoint
Toledo rises on a granite hill wrapped on three sides by a deep loop of the Tagus river. Capital of the Visigothic kingdom, then the Islamic city of Tulaytula and later the seat of the kings of Castile, it became known as the city of three cultures, where Christians, Muslims and Jews lived side by side for centuries. Its old town, a UNESCO site since 1986, is a maze of narrow lanes, synagogues, mosques and convents.
After about two hours on the coach from Ávila, your guide leads a one-hour walk through the historic centre, including corners few visitors find. To say goodbye, the tour stops at a panoramic viewpoint across the river, the classic Toledo postcard with the cathedral and the Alcázar crowning the hill, a perfect closing photo of this Toledo tour from Madrid.
Toledo Cathedral
The Primate Cathedral of Saint Mary of Toledo, begun in 1226 and completed in 1493, is one of the masterpieces of Spanish Gothic architecture and one of the largest cathedrals in the country. Inside, the highlights are the carved wooden choir stalls, the soaring main altarpiece, the baroque Transparente, lit by daylight falling through an opening in the vault, and a sacristy hung with paintings by great Spanish and European masters.
The default option includes your Toledo Cathedral ticket and a guided visit inside of about an hour, so you skip buying tickets on the spot. Shoulders and knees should be covered inside the cathedral. Toledo Cathedral opening hours can change on religious holidays; if a service closes the visit, the guide adapts the programme.
