Full Description
Plaza de San Francisco and the City Hall
For centuries Plaza de San Francisco was Seville's main square, the stage for markets, bullfights, royal celebrations and the public ceremonies of the Inquisition. Its east side is lined by the City Hall, whose 16th-century façade is one of the finest examples of Spanish Plateresque decoration, carved with mythological figures, coats of arms and delicate foliage. Opposite stands the grand Bank of Spain building, and at the centre the Mercury Fountain where your tour begins.
Your guide uses this square to introduce the whole story of Seville: Roman Hispalis, Moorish Ishbiliya, and the golden age when the city controlled trade with the Americas. Every spring the square becomes the heart of Holy Week processions. From here a short walk along Avenida de la Constitución brings you to the Cathedral.
Seville Cathedral and La Giralda
Seville Cathedral is the largest Gothic cathedral in the world, begun in 1401 on the site of the Almohad great mosque. Its builders were said to want a church so vast that future generations would think them mad. Two parts of the mosque survive: the Courtyard of the Orange Trees, the former ablutions court, and the Giralda, the 12th-century minaret whose brick lattice decoration was topped in 1568 with a Renaissance belfry and the bronze Giraldillo weathervane.
On the walking tour you stop outside the cathedral and the Giralda while your guide explains the architecture and the details of the doorways. The interior is not included, but the guide shares how to plan a visit: Seville Cathedral tickets are best bought online in advance, and Seville Cathedral opening hours usually run from late morning to late afternoon, with shorter hours on Sundays.
The Royal Alcázar of Seville
Facing the cathedral across Plaza del Triunfo rise the crenellated walls of the Royal Alcázar, a palace complex begun as a Moorish fortress and transformed by Castilian kings into one of the most beautiful examples of Mudéjar architecture. Its upper floors are still used by the Spanish royal family, making it the oldest royal palace in Europe still in use. Behind the Lion Gate lie tiled courtyards, carved stucco halls and vast gardens of orange trees, fountains and pavilions.
The tour stops at the walls and the Lion Gate while your guide tells the story of the palace and its many builders. The Alcázar is one of the most visited monuments in Spain, so Royal Alcázar tickets should be booked in advance, ideally for the first entry of the morning; plan two to three hours to see the palaces and gardens properly.
Torre del Oro and the Former Royal Tobacco Factory
A short walk towards the river brings you to the Torre del Oro, the twelve-sided Almohad watchtower of around 1220 that once guarded the harbour where treasure fleets from the Americas unloaded. Nearby, on the way to the park, stands the enormous Royal Tobacco Factory, built in the 18th century when Seville held the monopoly on processing tobacco from the New World. It was one of the largest industrial buildings in Europe, with its own moat and guardhouses.
Thousands of women once worked here rolling cigars, and the factory became a symbol of Seville around the world. Since the 1950s it has housed the University of Seville, and your guide points out its sculpted gateway and grand courtyards as you walk past. Students fill the patios during term, and the building is open to visitors on weekdays.
María Luisa Park and Plaza de España
The final part of the walk crosses María Luisa Park, the city's great green lung, named after the princess who donated these gardens in 1893 and redesigned for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition. Shady avenues of palms and orange trees lead past ponds, tiled benches and exhibition pavilions to Plaza de España, the most spectacular building of the exposition, a semicircle of brick and ceramics with a canal, four bridges and a tiled alcove for each Spanish province.
The tour ends here, giving you time to take photos and explore the alcoves at your own pace. Plaza de España is free and open at all hours, though it can close on some evenings for concerts or events, and the city may close the parks during high-wind alerts. Many visitors ask the best time to visit Plaza de España: late afternoon, when the brick glows.
