Full Description

St. Moritz Village and Lake

St. Moritz sits at about 1,820 metres in the Upper Engadin, above a calm lake framed by larch and pine forests. Iron-rich mineral springs were used here as early as the Bronze Age, and in the 1860s the village became one of the birthplaces of Alpine winter tourism. It hosted the Winter Olympics in 1928 and 1948, and in winter the frozen lake becomes a stage for races and events. Above the old town stands a leaning bell tower, the last remnant of a demolished church.

On this private St. Moritz tour we start with a short drive along the lake and a stop in the village centre for photos and orientation. The upper village has elegant shopping streets, while St. Moritz Bad by the water is quieter. Many guests ask whether St. Moritz is worth visiting outside the ski season: the summer lake, the golden larches of October and the crisp light make it beautiful all year.

Pontresina and the Engadin Houses

Pontresina lies a few kilometres east of St. Moritz at the entrance of the Bernina valley and has long been a base for mountaineers heading to the glaciers. Its main street is lined with typical Engadin houses: thick stone walls, deep-set windows, wide arched doorways and facades decorated with sgraffito, a technique of scratching patterns into layered plaster. Romansh, one of Switzerland's four national languages, is still heard here alongside German and Italian.

Your guide explains how these farmhouses were built to keep out the long Engadin winter and points out the oldest details as we pass. A short stop here gives you time for photos and a coffee, and the village is also a good place to buy local mountain products. In summer, the Roseg and Morteratsch valleys open just behind the village, offering some of the finest glacier scenery in the canton of Graubünden.

Morteratsch Glacier

The Morteratsch Glacier flows down from the Bernina massif and is one of the largest valley glaciers in the Eastern Alps. Since measurements began in the 1870s its tongue has retreated by well over two kilometres, and posts along the valley floor mark where the ice stood in different years. The result is a powerful outdoor lesson on climate and landscape, set among moraines, meltwater streams and young larch forest.

We stop near Morteratsch station, where you can see the glacier tongue framed by Piz Bernina and Piz Palü. Depending on your energy and the time you choose to spend, your guide can lead you a short way along the level path towards the ice for closer views, or you can simply enjoy the panorama from the start of the trail. Light is often best in the morning, before afternoon clouds build over the peaks.

Diavolezza and Piz Bernina

Piz Bernina reaches 4,049 metres and is the highest summit of the Eastern Alps and of the canton of Graubünden. The Diavolezza cable car climbs from the Bernina valley floor to a terrace at almost 3,000 metres, where the whole glacier amphitheatre opens in front of you: Piz Palü with its three snowy buttresses, Bellavista, Piz Bernina and the long Biancograt ridge, with the Pers and Morteratsch glaciers below.

The cable car ticket is not included, so you decide on the day whether to ride up; it usually runs most of the year, with short maintenance closures in spring and late autumn, so we check Diavolezza opening hours for your date. At the top there is a sun terrace and a mountain restaurant. On a clear day this is the highlight of the private Piz Bernina tour, but views depend entirely on the weather and are never guaranteed.

Bernina Pass and Lago Bianco

The Bernina Pass, at 2,328 metres, links the Engadin with the Poschiavo valley and Italy. Just below the road lies Lago Bianco, a long reservoir whose milky turquoise water comes from glacial silt. The pass is a watershed: streams on the north side flow to the Inn and on to the Danube and the Black Sea, while Lago Bianco drains south towards the Adriatic. The red trains of the Bernina line, part of a UNESCO World Heritage railway, run along the lakeshore.

We drive up for a photo stop at the top of the pass, with the chance to see a train glide past the lake if timing allows. The landscape here is high, open and often windy, even in summer, so keep a jacket handy. In winter the road stays open but snow can be deep, and your driver adjusts the route to the conditions of the day.
