Overview
This beginner ski afternoon takes first-time skiers from the Interlaken area up to the gentle Bodmi slopes in Grindelwald, right beneath the dark north face of the Eiger. You meet the team in Wilderswil, next to Interlaken, where skis, boots and a helmet are fitted for you. Then a patient instructor spends about two and a half hours teaching the basics in a small group of up to eight people: how to stand, glide, slow down, stop and make your first turns, using an easy conveyor-belt lift instead of a chairlift. It is a shared lesson for adults and teenagers aged 12 and over, ideal for couples and friends who want to try skiing safely during a winter trip to Switzerland.

Full Description
Grindelwald, the glacier village under the Eiger
Grindelwald sits at about 1,034 metres in a wide green bowl of the Bernese Oberland, framed by the Eiger, the Wetterhorn and the Mettenberg. Two glaciers once reached almost down to the houses, which is why it is still called the glacier village. In winter it becomes one of the main ski resorts of the Jungfrau region, with slopes on the First side and on the Kleine Scheidegg and Männlichen side.
For a beginner, Grindelwald is a friendly place to start because the lower slopes are wide and calm, and the scenery is spectacular even if you only slide a few metres. Many visitors treat this lesson as a Grindelwald day trip from Interlaken: after the lesson there is time to look around the village street, its chalets and the views of the mountains glowing in the late light.
The Bodmi beginner area
Bodmi is a gentle sunny meadow just above the centre of Grindelwald that turns into a beginner and children's ski area in winter. Instead of chairlifts it uses conveyor belts, often called magic carpets, which you simply step onto with your skis and ride slowly uphill. Your lift ticket for these carpets is included, so you can repeat the same short slope as many times as you need.
The slope is shallow and well groomed, which makes it the right place for a first Grindelwald ski lesson. Your instructor starts on almost flat ground, then moves to the gentle incline once the group feels balanced. Because the area is reserved for learners, you are not surrounded by fast skiers, and the atmosphere is relaxed and encouraging.
Eiger north face and the mountain panorama
From the practice slope you look straight at the Eiger, 3,967 metres high, whose north face rises around 1,800 metres of rock and ice above the valley. Next to it stand the pointed Wetterhorn and the rounded Mettenberg, with the Lower Grindelwald Glacier gorge between them. On clear afternoons the low winter sun lights up the snowfields, and the view alone makes the trip worthwhile.
Your instructor gives short breaks between exercises, and these are good moments for photos of the group with the Eiger behind. Keep your phone in an inside pocket while skiing, as cold drains batteries quickly. Weather in the mountains changes fast; on cloudy days the lesson still runs on the protected lower slopes, but the peaks may stay hidden.
Wilderswil and Interlaken, your starting point
The lesson begins in Wilderswil, a quiet village just south of Interlaken at the entrance to the Lütschine valleys that lead to Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen. Here the team fits your skis, boots and helmet, and you can rent a ski jacket, trousers and gloves on site if you did not bring them. Interlaken itself lies between lakes Thun and Brienz and is the main base for the whole Jungfrau region.
If you wonder how to get to Grindelwald from Interlaken on another day, the train from Interlaken Ost takes about 35 minutes. For this lesson you only need to reach the Wilderswil meeting point on time; the exact address is in your booking confirmation, and we can arrange a private transfer from your hotel in the region if you prefer.
Ski season and conditions in Grindelwald
The best time to ski in Grindelwald as a beginner is usually from late December to March, when the lower slopes have the most reliable snow. Early December and April depend on snowfall, and the lesson only runs while the beginner area is open. January and February are coldest, so dress in layers: thermal underwear, a fleece and a waterproof outer layer.
Halal food is limited in Grindelwald and the small mountain villages, though cafés offer vegetarian and fish dishes and simple snacks. Many guests eat a good breakfast before the afternoon start and bring a snack and water for the lesson breaks. Sunglasses and sun cream matter even in winter, because the snow reflects strong mountain light.
