Full Description
From Geneva to the Bernese Oberland by glass-roof coach
Your day begins at Place Dorcière in central Geneva, a few steps from the lake. The coach follows the shore of Lake Geneva before turning inland through the rolling farmland of the Swiss plateau, past the region of Fribourg and the capital, Bern, to reach Lake Thun and the mountains of the Bernese Oberland in a little under three hours.
The glass roof is the special feature of this coach: as the road nears the Alps, you can look straight up at cliffs, glaciers and snowy summits rather than only out of the side window. Your guide explains the landscape, Swiss traditions and the history of tourism in the Alps along the way, and suggests how to make the most of each free-time stop. Comfortable seats make the long day easier for families travelling with children.
Interlaken, between two lakes
Interlaken lies on a flat strip of land between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, two lakes whose waters are often an intense turquoise. The town's open meadow in the centre, the Höhematte, is kept free of buildings so that the snowy Jungfrau remains visible from the main avenue, and on most days paragliders float down onto it from the slopes above.
During your free time you can stroll the elegant Höheweg avenue with its old hotels and watch shops, cross to the riverside along the Aare that links the two lakes, or simply sit with a view of the mountains. Halal options exist in Interlaken but are limited, so many travellers bring snacks. Is Interlaken worth visiting? As the gateway to the whole Jungfrau region, it is the natural first stop of any Bernese Oberland day trip.
The Lauterbrunnen valley and Staubbach Falls
South of Interlaken the road enters the Lauterbrunnen valley, one of the most dramatic glacial valleys in the Alps, with nearly vertical limestone walls rising hundreds of metres on both sides and waterfalls pouring over the edges. The village of Lauterbrunnen, with its wooden chalets and church, sits on the valley floor surrounded by meadows.
The best-known sight is Staubbach Falls, which drops almost 300 m from the cliff above the village and turns to fine spray before reaching the ground; a short path leads to a viewpoint at its foot. A few kilometres further up the valley, the Trümmelbach Falls thunder inside the mountain and are open from spring to autumn, at your own expense if time allows. The best time to visit Lauterbrunnen is late spring and early summer, when snowmelt makes the falls most powerful.
Grindelwald, the village beneath the Eiger
The last stop is Grindelwald, a mountain village at about 1,000 m spread across green slopes beneath the dark north face of the Eiger, with the Wetterhorn and Schreckhorn rising alongside. Chalets with flower-filled balconies line the main street, and on clear days the view of the Eiger's wall of rock and ice dominates every corner of the village.
Your free time here is perfect for photos, a hot chocolate on a terrace or a short stroll toward the edge of the village. Grindelwald is also the starting point of lifts to First and of the Eiger Express toward the Jungfraujoch, but these are not included and need more time than a short stop allows. Halal food is limited in the village. In the late afternoon the coach returns to Geneva, arriving in the evening.
