Full Description
Stans, the Gateway to the Stanserhorn
Stans is the small capital of the canton of Nidwalden, about 15 to 20 minutes by train from Lucerne. Its main square is framed by the baroque church of St. Peter and Paul, whose older Romanesque bell tower survives from an earlier building, and by stately town houses. In 1481 an agreement signed here between the early Swiss cantons helped keep the young confederation together, so the town holds an important place in Swiss history.
The lower station of the Stanserhorn railway is a few minutes on foot from Stans station, and your guide leads the way so you never have to think about connections. If you wonder how to get to the Stanserhorn from Lucerne, this train-and-funicular route is the classic one. Time in Stans itself is short on this trip, but your guide points out the square and the church as you pass.
The Historic Funicular of 1893
The first part of the climb is made in the wooden cars of a funicular that opened in 1893, when railways were transforming travel in the Alps. Pulled by cable up a steep track through meadows and orchards, it carries you from Stans to the middle station at Kälti. Originally the line continued to the summit in three sections; the upper part was later replaced by a cable car after a fire in 1970 destroyed the old summit station.
Riding the old funicular is a slow and charming experience, with the slopes of Nidwalden and the roofs of Stans falling away behind you. Your guide shares stories of the early days of mountain tourism around Lake Lucerne. The ride takes around ten minutes, and at Kälti you change directly to the modern CabriO for the second, more dramatic part of the ascent.
The CabriO Cable Car
Opened in 2012, the CabriO is the first cable car in the world with an open-air upper deck. Its cabins have two levels: an enclosed lower deck and a roofless top deck reached by a small staircase, where up to 30 passengers stand in the open air as the cabin glides up the mountainside. The cables run along the sides of the cabin, leaving the roof completely free for the view.
The ride from Kälti to the summit station at about 1,850 metres takes around six minutes, and the feeling of wind and space is unique in the Alps. The upper deck is open in good weather, so in rain or strong wind everyone rides inside. Is the Stanserhorn worth visiting just for this ride? Many travellers say yes: it turns a simple ascent into the highlight of the day.
The Stanserhorn Summit and Its Views
The Stanserhorn rises to 1,898 metres between Lake Lucerne and the high Alps, which makes its summit an outstanding natural balcony. On clear days you see the arms of Lake Lucerne, several smaller lakes in the lowlands, and a long line of snowy peaks stretching towards the Bernese Alps. A short path of about 15 minutes leads from the station to the true summit, and a circular trail passes the marmot area where these alpine animals are often seen from spring to autumn.
The summit station has a terrace and a revolving panoramic restaurant if you wish to buy a snack. The railway operates from spring to late autumn, with only limited winter dates, so the booking calendar shows the days available. As for the best time to visit the Stanserhorn, mornings tend to be clearest, while late-afternoon departures bring a softer light over the lake.
