Full Description
Chapel Bridge and the Water Tower
Chapel Bridge crosses the Reuss river diagonally where it leaves Lake Lucerne and was first built in the 14th century as part of the town's fortifications. It is the oldest covered wooden bridge in Europe, and under its roof hang triangular paintings from the 17th century showing scenes of Lucerne and Swiss history. A fire in 1993 destroyed much of it, but it was rebuilt within a year using surviving parts. Beside it rises the octagonal Water Tower, built around 1300, which served as a treasury, archive and prison.
Your guide starts the private Lucerne tour here, at the most photographed view in Switzerland, explaining the paintings and the town's medieval defences. Early morning is the quietest time for photos. The Spreuer Bridge downstream, with its own series of paintings, is a calmer second wooden bridge that many visitors miss.
Lucerne Old Town and the Jesuit Church
The Old Town spreads along the right bank of the Reuss with small squares surrounded by guild houses whose facades are covered in colourful frescoes. The Kornmarkt is dominated by the Renaissance town hall of the early 1600s, while the Hirschenplatz shows some of the most richly painted houses. On the opposite bank, the Jesuit Church, completed in 1677, was the first large baroque church in Switzerland, with a bright white and pink interior.
Above the roofs runs the Musegg Wall, a long stretch of medieval ramparts with towers, one of which holds the oldest clock in town. Over about two hours your guide links these sights into one story of a market town on the route to the Gotthard Pass. Many people ask if Lucerne is worth visiting for a day: its compact centre, lake setting and mountain views make it one of the most rewarding cities in Switzerland.
The Lion Monument
Carved in 1820 and 1821 into the rock face of a former sandstone quarry, the Lion Monument shows a dying lion lying on a broken spear, sheltering a shield with the lily of the French monarchy. It honours the Swiss Guards who lost their lives in Paris in 1792, when revolutionaries stormed the Tuileries Palace, where they were defending the royal family. The lion is about ten metres long and lies above a small reflecting pool surrounded by trees.
The monument is free to visit and open at all hours, and the quiet park around it invites a few minutes of reflection. Your guide explains the history of Swiss soldiers serving foreign courts, a tradition that shaped many Swiss families for centuries. The site is a short drive or walk from the Old Town, and it is often less crowded in the morning.
Along Lake Lucerne to Engelberg
Lake Lucerne winds between steep mountains in long arms, and its German name refers to the four forested cantons around its shores. From the city, the road follows the lake past Hergiswil and Stansstad before turning into the Engelberg valley, with Pilatus and Rigi on the horizon. The drive of about 45 minutes is part of the experience, and our driver stops for photos whenever you ask.
Engelberg, at about 1,000 metres, grew around a Benedictine abbey founded in 1120 and is the base station for Titlis. If you are wondering how to get to Mount Titlis from Lucerne, it is a train or car journey to Engelberg followed by a chain of cable cars, and on this tour our vehicle takes you to the door of the valley station. Halal food is limited in Engelberg, though Lucerne has a few options.
Mount Titlis, Cliff Walk and Glacier Cave
From Engelberg a gondola climbs via Lake Trübsee to Stand, where the Rotair takes over: opened in 1992, it was the first rotating cable car in the world, turning a full circle on the way to the top station at about 3,020 metres. Titlis reaches 3,238 metres, and its glacier is covered in snow all year. The Cliff Walk, opened in 2012, is the highest suspension bridge in Europe, crossing about 100 metres of void with a drop of some 500 metres.
Inside the glacier, a tunnel lit in cold blue leads through ice that stays below freezing in every season. You spend around two to three hours at the summit, with time for the viewing platforms and a hot drink. The best time to visit Titlis for views is a clear morning; the summit often clouds over in the afternoon, and the Cliff Walk closes in strong wind.
