Full Description
Engelberg, the gateway to Mount Titlis
Most Mount Titlis tours from Lucerne begin with the scenic coach ride south to Engelberg, a valley town in Central Switzerland that has grown around a Benedictine monastery founded in the twelfth century. The road climbs gently between meadows and steep forested slopes until the white mass of Titlis appears above the rooftops. Your guide uses the drive to explain the region and how the day will run.
From the valley station you do not need to worry about Mount Titlis tickets or queues, because the cable cars are part of this tour. If you are asking how to get to Mount Titlis from Lucerne, the coach transfer plus the guided programme is the easiest answer, and it leaves you free to enjoy the mountain.
The Rotair cable car and the ride to the summit
The route to the top of Titlis, at more than 3,200 metres, uses several cable-car stages via Trübsee and Stand. The final stage is normally the Rotair, the first revolving cable car in the world, whose cabin turns through a full circle so that everyone sees the steep crevasses and ice boulders below. This year the Rotair is closed for part of the season, and a standard cable car and adjusted routing may be used instead.
Whichever cabin you ride, the journey takes about thirty-five minutes each way and gives an excellent first look at the Titlis glacier. Your guide will tell you if the routing differs from the standard programme on your date.
The Ice Flyer, Glacier Cave and Glacier Park
The Ice Flyer is a chairlift that carries you slowly above the glacier, close enough to see the blue cracks and the wind-shaped snow. It leads to the Glacier Park, a snowfield with activities that change with the season, and snow tubing is offered in summer up here or at Trübsee in winter, depending on conditions. Everything at this altitude is weather permitting, so the programme can vary on the day.
The Glacier Cave is a walk-in tunnel carved about 150 metres into the ice, where the light turns from white to deep blue. Together these stops answer the common question of what to do on a Mount Titlis day trip: you can be in a snowy landscape in the morning and back beside Lake Lucerne by evening.
The Cliff Walk and the summit views
The Cliff Walk is a narrow suspension bridge stretched between rock faces at about 3,000 metres, often described as the highest suspension bridge in Europe. It is short, but walking above a drop of hundreds of metres with the Alps around you is a highlight, and the glass and steel walkway is safe and well maintained.
Because a new summit building is under construction, the time at the top can be limited to about an hour on some dates, and an optional viewing deck, the TITLIS Horizon, is paid for on the spot if you want it. Dress warmly and wear sunglasses, since the glare from the snow is strong even under cloud.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
How much does the Mount Titlis tour cost?

Is hotel pickup included?
No. The tour starts from a meeting point in Lucerne shown on your voucher; hotel pickup is not included. Please arrive about fifteen minutes before departure.
How long is the Mount Titlis tour?
About five and a half hours from Lucerne and back. Because of construction at the summit, time at the top can be limited to roughly an hour on some dates; your guide confirms the schedule.
Is the Mount Titlis tour suitable for children?
Yes. Children aged 6 to 15 have their own child price and younger children can travel as infants; check the age bands in the booking panel. Children usually love the Glacier Park and the snow, but the tour is not suitable for wheelchair users.
What should I wear and bring?
Wear warm layers, waterproof or non-slip shoes, gloves, a hat, sunglasses and sun cream; it is close to freezing at the summit even in summer. Bring your passport or ID card.
Can I book the Mount Titlis tour for today or tomorrow?
Yes, when places are still open. Choose a date in the booking panel and it shows what is available for that day. Popular dates and school holidays fill up early, so we suggest booking as soon as your plans are fixed.

How high is Mount Titlis?
The summit of Titlis is at about 3,238 metres, and the tour reaches the glacier area near the top by cable car.
Is the Rotair revolving cable car running?
The Rotair is closed for part of the season, and during that time a standard cable car and altered routing may be used. Your guide will confirm what is operating on your date.
Is Mount Titlis worth visiting in summer?
Yes. The glacier stays snowy all year, so summer visitors can enjoy snow, ice and Alpine views while the valley below is green and warm. Pack warm clothes even in July.
