Overview

This ticket covers the classic Mount Pilatus round trip from Lucerne, often called the Golden Round Trip, combining five ways to travel in one half-day loop. A city bus takes you to Kriens, where a panorama gondola and an aerial cableway lift you to Pilatus Kulm at about 2,100 metres, with views over Lake Lucerne and the Alps. You descend on the world's steepest cogwheel railway to Alpnachstad and sail back to Lucerne across the lake. It is a self-guided ticket on public transport, so you set your own pace at the summit; the loop can also be done in reverse. Allow about four and a half hours. It is ideal for couples, families and friends who want Lucerne's mountain and lake in one day.

Full Description

Lucerne to Kriens and the panorama gondola

The round trip starts right outside Lucerne railway station, where city bus line 1 towards Obernau takes you in about eleven minutes to the stop Kriens, Zentrum Pilatus. A short stroll through the suburb brings you to the valley station of the panorama gondola. Many visitors ask how to get to Mount Pilatus from Lucerne, and this route is the simplest: no car, no transfers to organise.

Small four-seat cabins carry you gently up over farms, orchards and pine forest to the middle station of Krienseregg, with a playground popular with families, and on to Fräkmüntegg, the second stop. At Fräkmüntegg you will find a rope park in the trees and one of the longest summer toboggan runs in Switzerland, both optional and at extra cost. The gondola section takes about thirty minutes in total and gives lovely views back over Lucerne and its lake.

Aerial cableway to Pilatus Kulm

At Fräkmüntegg you change to the large aerial cableway, nicknamed the Dragon Ride, whose cabins have floor-to-ceiling windows and a cockpit-like front. In about four minutes it glides up the steep rock face, and the feeling is closer to a helicopter flight than a cable car.

Pilatus Kulm, at about 2,100 metres, is the summit terrace of a dramatic limestone ridge. Short, marked paths lead to the nearby peaks of Esel, Oberhaupt and Tomlishorn, each a few minutes to half an hour away, and a path through rock galleries known as the dragon path reveals windows cut into the cliff. Local legends say dragons once lived in the caves of Pilatus, which is why the mountain is often called the Dragon Mountain. Is Mount Pilatus worth visiting? On a clear day the panorama of the lake, the hills and the snow peaks of central Switzerland is outstanding.

The world's steepest cogwheel railway

From the summit you descend to Alpnachstad on the cogwheel railway that opened in 1889 and still holds the title of the steepest in the world, with gradients reaching about 48 percent. Its red railcars are built in a stepped shape so passengers stay level, and a special horizontal rack system keeps them safely on the track.

The ride takes around forty minutes downhill, through tunnels, past sheer rock walls, rushing streams and summer meadows full of flowers, with Lake Alpnach shining below. Sit on the side facing the valley for the best views. The cogwheel railway runs only in the warmer months, roughly from mid-May to mid-November, which is when the full round trip is possible. A seat reservation is recommended in busy periods, as queues can form, and it is not included in this ticket.

Lake Lucerne cruise from Alpnachstad

At Alpnachstad you simply walk through an underpass to the boat landing. From here the lake boat sails out of the narrow arm of Lake Alpnach, under a bridge and into the main body of Lake Lucerne, with Pilatus towering behind you and the wooded slopes of the Bürgenstock and Rigi ahead.

The cruise lasts around one to one and a half hours depending on the boat and stops, and it ends at the landing stages right in front of Lucerne railway station. It is the perfect, relaxing finale after the mountain: find a seat on deck, watch the villages and villas slip by, and see Lucerne's towers and the Chapel Bridge appear as you approach. There are only a few boat departures a day from Alpnachstad, so check the timetable carefully and plan your summit time around the boat you want to catch.

Best time to visit Mount Pilatus

The best time to visit Mount Pilatus for the full round trip is from late May to October, when the cogwheel railway and the boats both operate and the days are long. Clear mornings bring the sharpest views; clouds often build in the afternoon, and sometimes you may rise above a sea of fog that covers the lake while the summit is in sunshine.

Start early, between 08:00 and 10:00, to avoid the busiest gondolas and to have time at the top before your boat. The summit is noticeably colder and windier than Lucerne, so bring a warm layer. There are restaurants and a self-service café at Pilatus Kulm and Fräkmüntegg, but halal choices on the mountain are very limited; Lucerne itself has more options, including a few restaurants that serve halal food.
