Full Description
The Swiss Museum of Transport on Lake Lucerne
The Swiss Museum of Transport opened in 1959 on the shore of Lake Lucerne and has grown into a campus of large halls and open-air areas linked by a central square. It tells how a mountainous country built railways through the Alps, roads over high passes, airports, lake fleets and even links to space, and it does so with full-size originals rather than glass cases. That is why it is the most visited museum in Switzerland.
Is the Swiss Museum of Transport worth visiting? For families, train lovers and anyone with a rainy day in Lucerne, it is one of the best choices in the city. Most visitors spend two to three hours inside, but your ticket is valid for the whole day, so you can take a break at the cafés on site and carry on. Food and drinks are not included, and halal options are easier to find back in the city centre.
Rail, road, aviation and navigation halls
The Rail Transport Hall displays historic steam engines, electric locomotives and carriages, including trains from the great Alpine lines, and model railways show how tunnels and bridges were built. Train simulators let you drive through signals and stations. In the Road Transport Hall, a tall automated rack brings famous cars and motorcycles to the front, while a crash-test station shows why seat belts matter.
The aviation and space area holds historic aircraft and flying machines, with simulators that put you at the controls of an aeroplane, a helicopter or a hang-glider. The Navigation Hall covers boats on Swiss lakes and rivers and on the oceans, with models of lake steamers and interactive displays about locks and harbours. Children love the outdoor areas between the halls, where there is room to run and explore.
Swissarena, Media World and the extra attractions
In the Swissarena you walk in socks across an enormous aerial photograph of Switzerland printed on the floor, finding cities, lakes and mountains from above, a favourite moment for adults as much as children. The Media World is included in your ticket: you can read the news in a real TV studio, try directing and editing, and explore new media with virtual-reality goggles.
The museum also has the largest planetarium in Switzerland, a film theatre with the largest screen in the country and a chocolate attraction that tells the story of Swiss chocolate in an animated ride. These three are not included in the entrance ticket; tickets can be bought on site if you wish to add them. Check the screening times on arrival and plan your day around them.
