Full Description
The lake cruise from Lucerne to Vitznau
Your day begins at Lucerne lake pier 1, right opposite the train station, with boats leaving at 09:12, 10:12, 12:00, 14:12 and 15:12. The crossing to Vitznau takes about an hour on the central basin of Lake Lucerne, passing the villas of the lakeshore, the Hertenstein peninsula and Weggis, with Mount Pilatus behind you and the slopes of Rigi rising ahead.
For a full day with time in the baths, we recommend one of the morning departures. The round-trip cruise is in second class, with open decks and large windows, and it is a relaxing introduction to the region. If you are wondering how to get to Mount Rigi from Lucerne, this is the classic route: boat to Vitznau, then the connecting cogwheel train waiting near the pier.
Cogwheel railway to Rigi Kulm
In Vitznau you change directly to the red trains of the Vitznau–Rigi railway, which opened in 1871 as the first mountain railway in Europe. The line climbs from the lakeshore at about 435 metres to Rigi Kulm at 1,797 metres in around 30 to 40 minutes, gripping a toothed rail on gradients that would be impossible for normal trains. Your ticket includes unlimited rides on this line for the day.
At the summit, a historic locomotive exhibition presents one of the early steam engines of the line, and entry is included. Rigi Kulm offers a full 360-degree panorama over Lake Lucerne, Lake Zug and the chain of the Alps. Is Mount Rigi worth visiting? On a clear day the view alone answers the question, and the whole mountain is car-free and peaceful.
From the summit down to Rigi Kaltbad
From Rigi Kulm you can walk down to Rigi Kaltbad in about 35 minutes on a well-marked mountain path through pastures, or take the hourly train if you prefer to save your energy. The path is downhill and gentle, with open views over the lakes most of the way, and in summer the meadows are full of wildflowers and grazing cows.
Rigi Kaltbad, at about 1,440 metres, is a small car-free village on a sunny terrace of the mountain. Before or after the baths, take a few minutes to the Chänzeli viewpoint, a rocky balcony above the lake, or stroll part of the Felsenweg panoramic path. Restaurants serve Swiss dishes, but halal food is limited on Rigi, so a packed lunch from Lucerne is a good idea.
Rigi Kaltbad mineral baths
The Rigi Kaltbad mineral baths opened in 2012 in a striking modern building of stone and glass set into the mountainside. Warm mineral water from a local spring fills an indoor pool and an outdoor pool, where you float at around 35 °C while looking out over the clouds and the Alps. Your ticket includes day entry, with no reservation and no time limit inside.
Bring your own swimwear and a towel; towels can also be hired on site for a small fee. The baths are calm and suitable for adults and children, and they are especially wonderful on a crisp autumn or winter afternoon, when the air is cold and the water steams. Plan at least one to two hours here before heading down to the lake.
Back to Lucerne via Weggis or Vitznau
For the return, you have two options. The cable car from Rigi Kaltbad down to Weggis leaves at 16:10, 16:40, 17:10 and 17:40, and from Weggis the boat takes you back to Lucerne. Alternatively, ride the cogwheel train from Kaltbad to Vitznau at 15:15, 16:15 or 17:15 to meet the return boat.
If the cable car is closed because of weather or maintenance, the train to Vitznau is always the alternative. The best time to visit Mount Rigi for this ticket is from May to October for long days and green slopes, though the mineral baths make autumn and winter just as rewarding. Check the last boat times in Weggis and Vitznau before you go up.
