Full Description

From Geneva along Lake Geneva to the Gruyère region

The drive from Geneva to Gruyères takes about one hour and 30 minutes, following the north shore of Lake Geneva past Lausanne before the road climbs above the lake. On a clear morning you see the Lavaux terraces, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of stone-walled slopes falling to the water, and the Alps of Savoy rising across the lake on the French side.

Beyond Vevey the road turns inland into the Gruyère region, a land of rolling pastures, wooden farms and the jagged summit of the Moléson. Because this is a private Gruyères tour from Geneva, the vehicle is yours: tell the guide if you want a photo stop above the lake or a coffee break, and the day adapts to your group rather than to a coach schedule.

The chocolate factory and museum in Broc

Chocolate has been made in the village of Broc, at the foot of the Gruyère hills, since 1898, using fresh milk from the cows of the region. The factory museum tells the story of chocolate from the cacao bean to the bar through a lively, multimedia route, then lets you see part of the production and learn how Swiss milk chocolate gets its smooth texture.

The visit ends with a generous tasting of different chocolates, a highlight for children and adults alike, and there is a shop for gifts. Allow about an hour and 15 minutes. Is the chocolate factory in Broc worth visiting? For families and anyone who loves chocolate, it is one of the most enjoyable visits in western Switzerland, and the default private option includes your entrance ticket.

Gruyères, the medieval hilltop village

Gruyères is a small fortified town on a green hill, with a single car-free main street of cobblestones, flower-decked houses and a stone fountain, closed at one end by the castle. The crane on its coat of arms gives the town its name. From the ramparts you look over the pastures to the Moléson and the pre-Alps, one of the most beautiful views in the canton of Fribourg.

Lunch is free time in the village, at your own expense: the local restaurants serve cheese fondue, potato dishes and the famous Gruyère meringues with thick double cream. Halal food is very limited in Gruyères, and traditional fondue recipes may not meet halal requirements, so travellers who eat halal often bring a packed lunch from Geneva or choose vegetarian dishes. Our guide is happy to suggest options.

Gruyères Castle

Gruyères Castle dates from the 13th century and was the seat of the counts of Gruyère, who ruled the region until 1554. Later it became the residence of governors from Fribourg and then of families who restored it as a home for artists in the 19th century. Today its rooms trace eight centuries of history, from the medieval kitchen and the knights' hall to painted salons and tapestries.

The French-style garden and the terraces offer superb views over the valley. Gruyères Castle opening hours are usually daily from morning to late afternoon, and the visit takes about 45 minutes to an hour. With the default option your entrance ticket is included, so you skip buying tickets on site and can spend your time inside.

The Gruyère show dairy in Pringy

At the foot of the hill, in the village of Pringy, the show dairy explains how Gruyère cheese is made. Gruyère has protected designation of origin status, which means it must be made in this region from raw cow's milk and matured for at least five months; around 400 litres of milk go into a single wheel of about 35 kilograms. A short exhibition with audio guide lets you smell the herbs and flowers of the mountain pastures.

Through large windows you watch the cheesemakers at work in copper vats, usually several times a day, with the morning being the best time to see the process. Then you visit the cellar where hundreds of wheels mature on wooden shelves. The visit takes about an hour, and you can buy cheese of different ages to take home.
