Full Description

The chocolate factory in the Gruyère region

Your first visit is a chocolate factory at the foot of the Gruyère hills, where chocolate has been made with milk from local farms since the end of the 19th century. A lively museum route tells the story of chocolate, from the cacao bean and its journey to Europe to the invention of Swiss milk chocolate, and lets you see how the ingredients are mixed, conched and moulded.

The best moment comes at the end: a tasting of many different chocolates, from creamy milk pralines to dark bars. There is a shop where you can buy gifts to take home. Allow about an hour. For families and anyone with a sweet tooth, this visit is one of the reasons a Gruyères day trip from Geneva is so popular.

The Gruyère show dairy

Gruyère cheese has protected designation of origin status: it must be made in this region, from raw milk of cows fed on grass and hay, and matured for at least five months. At the show dairy at the foot of Gruyères you follow the whole process, from fresh milk in large copper vats to the pressing of the wheels, each made from around 400 litres of milk and weighing about 35 kilograms.

An audio-guided exhibition explains the life of the dairy farmers and the alpine summer pastures, and lets you smell the herbs and flowers that give the cheese its taste. Through the windows of the cellar you see the wheels maturing on wooden shelves. Cheese is usually made several times a day, and the morning is often the best time to see the cheesemakers at work.

Gruyères, the medieval village

Gruyères is a small walled town on a green hill, with one cobbled, car-free main street of old houses, a stone fountain and colourful shutters, crowned by its 13th-century castle, once the seat of the counts of Gruyère. From the ramparts you look out to the Moléson and the pre-Alps. Is Gruyères worth visiting? It is one of the most charming small towns in Switzerland and easy to explore in an hour or two.

With the default option you enjoy a traditional cheese fondue lunch in the village, the dish that made the region famous, with bread to dip into the melted cheese. Traditional fondue recipes may not meet halal requirements and halal food is very limited in Gruyères; tell us about dietary needs when you book so we can ask about alternatives, or choose the classic option and bring a packed lunch.

The GoldenPass panoramic train

In the afternoon the default option includes a ride on the GoldenPass line, one of the most scenic narrow-gauge railways in Switzerland, which links Montreux on Lake Geneva with the Bernese Oberland. Panoramic carriages with large windows let you enjoy the landscape of wooden chalets, forests, deep valleys and mountain pastures as the train winds through the pre-Alps.

The exact section of the line depends on the day's timetable, and the coach meets the group at the arrival station for the drive back to Geneva. In autumn the forests turn gold and red, and in winter the pastures are covered with snow, so the train is beautiful in every season. Sit on the side the guide suggests for the best views.

Lake Geneva and the Lavaux terraces

The drive between Geneva and Gruyères takes about one hour and 30 minutes and follows the shore of Lake Geneva, the largest lake in western Europe. Beyond Lausanne the road runs high above the water, with views across to the Alps of Savoy on the French side and down to the Lavaux terraces, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of stone-walled slopes stepping down to the lake.

The best time to visit Gruyères is from May to October, when the pastures are green and the days are long, but the chocolate and cheese visits are indoors, so the trip works well all year. Mountain and lake views depend on the weather. The coach returns to central Geneva in the early evening, about ten hours after departure.
