Full Description
Annecy old town and its canals
Annecy lies in the French Alps, about 40 kilometres south of Geneva, at the northern end of Lake Annecy. Its old town grew up along the Thiou, a short river that drains the lake, and the canals, footbridges and window boxes full of geraniums have earned it the nickname Venice of the Alps.
On the guided walk you follow the quays past pastel houses and cobbled lanes, learning how the town prospered as the seat of the Counts of Geneva and later as a centre of the Catholic Counter-Reformation. An Annecy guided tour is the best way to understand the old town in a short time, and the rest of the morning is yours to explore on your own.
The Palais de l'Isle
The Palais de l'Isle is Annecy's emblem, a 12th-century stone building shaped like the prow of a ship, sitting on an island in the middle of the Thiou canal. Over the centuries it served as a lord's residence, a mint, a courthouse and a prison, which is why it is often called the old prisons.
Today it houses a small museum on the history of Annecy, while its outline, framed by the canal and flowers, is one of the most photographed views in France. The best photo spot is from the bridges on Quai de l'Isle, especially in the soft morning light.
Lake Annecy and the Pont des Amours
Lake Annecy is famous for its turquoise water, which is among the cleanest of any lake in Europe thanks to strict protection measures introduced in the 1960s. Surrounded by mountains such as the Tournette and the Semnoz, it is a favourite spot for swimming, paddling and cycling in summer.
During your free time, walk from the old town to the Jardins de l'Europe, a lakeside park with tall trees, and cross the Pont des Amours, the little bridge where the Vassé canal meets the lake. A lake cruise is not included, but you can easily buy a boat ticket on the spot if time allows. Visiting Lake Annecy in late spring or early autumn means fewer crowds.
Château d'Annecy and Rue Sainte-Claire
Above the old town stands the Château d'Annecy, the former residence of the Counts of Geneva and later the Dukes of Genevois-Nemours. It now holds a museum of regional art and history, and its terrace offers a lovely view over the rooftops and the lake. Entrance is not included, but you can visit during your free time.
Below it, Rue Sainte-Claire is the town's most charming street, lined with stone arcades that shelter bakeries, cheese shops and boutiques. On market days the old town fills with stalls selling Savoy produce, which makes this Annecy day trip from Geneva feel even livelier.
