Full Description
Chamonix-Mont-Blanc
Chamonix lies about 90 minutes from Geneva in a deep valley carved by the Arve river, with the granite needles of the Mont Blanc massif rising steeply on one side and the Aiguilles Rouges on the other. It became famous in the 18th century when the first travellers came to see its glaciers, and in 1924 it hosted the first Winter Olympic Games.
Today Chamonix is known as the world capital of mountaineering, hiking and paragliding. In your free time you can walk along the lively Rue du Docteur Paccard, see the statue of Balmat and de Saussure pointing at Mont Blanc, or visit the Alpine Museum. A day trip to Chamonix from Geneva is one of the easiest ways to reach the high Alps without a car.
Aiguille du Midi cable car
The cable car to the Aiguille du Midi was the highest in the world when it opened in 1955. It climbs in two stages, via the Plan de l'Aiguille, to a rocky spire at 3,842 metres, gaining almost 2,800 metres of height in about 20 minutes. At the top, terraces and a lift inside the rock lead to viewpoints facing the summit of Mont Blanc just a few kilometres away.
The most famous spot is Step into the Void, a glass box suspended over a 1,000-metre drop. On clear days the panorama stretches across the Alps of France, Switzerland and Italy. The air is thin and very cold, so move slowly. The best time to visit the Aiguille du Midi is in the morning, before clouds build up.
Montenvers train and the Mer de Glace
The red Montenvers cogwheel train has run since 1908 from Chamonix up to 1,913 metres. The 20-minute ride winds through larch forest to a viewpoint above the Mer de Glace, the Sea of Ice, the largest glacier in France at about seven kilometres long, framed by the sharp peaks of the Drus and the Grandes Jorasses.
From the station, a gondola and a long staircase lead down to an ice cave carved into the glacier each year. Signs along the way show where the ice surface stood in past decades, a striking lesson in how quickly the glacier is retreating. Allow about two hours for a Mer de Glace visit, including the walk to the cave.
Mont Blanc, the roof of Western Europe
Mont Blanc rises to around 4,800 metres, straddling the border between France and Italy, and is the highest mountain in the Alps. It was first climbed in 1786 by Jacques Balmat and Michel-Gabriel Paccard, an event often seen as the birth of modern mountaineering. From Chamonix its snowy dome dominates the southern skyline.
The drive from Geneva is part of the experience: the glass-roof coach lets you watch the peaks grow taller as you follow the Arve Valley into the Haute-Savoie. Your guide explains the landscape and helps you plan your mountain activities so you can make the most of the day.
