Full Description

Lauterbrunnen valley and Staubbach Falls

Lauterbrunnen lies at the bottom of a deep glacial valley whose limestone cliffs rise straight up for several hundred metres. Dozens of streams spill over the rim, and the most famous of them, Staubbach Falls, drops almost 300 m right beside the village church, turning to fine spray before it reaches the ground. In early summer, when the snow melts, the valley is loud with falling water; in late autumn the falls thin to silver threads.

On this private Lauterbrunnen tour we stop in the village for photos of the falls and the wooden chalets beneath them, and your guide explains how the glaciers carved the valley. If you have ever wondered how to get to Lauterbrunnen from Bern, the drive takes about 1 hour 10 minutes along Lake Thun and through Interlaken, and our vehicle does it door to door.

Mürren, the car-free village on the cliff

Mürren sits on a sunny terrace at 1,638 m, about 800 m above the valley floor, and no road reaches it: the only ways up are by cable car or mountain railway. That is why the village is so quiet, with wooden houses, small hotels and meadows that end abruptly at the edge of the cliff. Across the valley, the north faces of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau fill the horizon.

Depending on the day, we ride up from Stechelberg via the tiny farming hamlet of Gimmelwald, or from Lauterbrunnen via Grütschalp. In Mürren you have time to stroll the main lane, sit on a bench facing the peaks and take family photos with the glaciers behind you. A Mürren day trip from Bern is usually done by train with several changes; on this tour the guide handles every connection.

Birg station and its cliff-edge platform

Above Mürren the cable car climbs over scree slopes and old snowfields to Birg, the intermediate station at 2,677 m. Built on a rocky spur, Birg has a viewing platform that juts out over the precipice and a steel cliff walk with see-through sections, fixed to the rock face beneath the station. It is one of the most dramatic viewpoints in the Bernese Oberland and a favourite with older children.

Birg is optional on this private day: if the weather is clear and your party feels like it, your guide can plan a short break here on the way up or down. Those who prefer to stay away from the edge can watch from inside the station, which has wide windows. The views look straight across to the Jungfrau massif and down into the valley you came from.

Schilthorn summit at 2,970 m

The final cable car brings you to the Schilthorn summit, where a round building with a revolving restaurant crowns the peak. The floor turns a full circle in about 45 minutes, so diners see the whole panorama without moving. Outside, viewing terraces and a short panorama path circle the summit, and on a clear day the view runs from the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau to distant ranges far beyond the Bernese Alps.

Is Schilthorn worth visiting? On a clear day, absolutely: it is less crowded than Jungfraujoch and its open, 360-degree outlook is one of the finest in Switzerland. Plan about 1.5 to 2 hours at the top. The air is cool even in summer and often below freezing in winter, so bring a warm layer. Views depend on the weather and are never guaranteed.

Schilthorn opening hours and the best time to go

The Schilthorn cable cars run all year, generally from early morning until late afternoon, with slightly longer hours in summer. They close for a short annual maintenance period, usually in spring or late autumn, so we check the dates when you book. Mornings tend to be clearer, while clouds often build over the peaks after midday in summer.

The best time to visit Schilthorn depends on what you want to see: June to September brings green meadows, waterfalls at full strength and mild air in Mürren, while December to March turns the whole area into a snow landscape with ski slopes below the summit. Autumn offers sharp, clear days and fewer visitors. Whatever the season, our guide watches the live mountain webcams and can adjust the order of the day to give you the best chance of a clear view.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this tour private?

Yes. The vehicle and the English-speaking guide are for your party only. No other travellers join, so you decide the pace and the photo stops.

Can we change the itinerary or the pace?

Within the day, yes. You can spend more time in Mürren, skip Birg or add a photo stop on Lake Thun. Your guide adapts the order to the weather and the cable car timetable.

How many people can join, and how many fit in the vehicle?

The tour is booked for your own group. Tell us your group size when booking and we confirm a vehicle that seats everyone comfortably with luggage space for day bags.

Is the price per person or per group?

The price is calculated per person for a private group. The booking panel on this page shows the current price for the number of travellers you select.

Is hotel pickup included?

Yes. We pick you up from any address in Bern confirmed at booking and drop you back at the same place.

How long is the tour?

About 9 hours door to door, including roughly 2.5 hours of driving and around 4 hours in the mountains.
