Full Description

Grindelwald Glacier Canyon: Nature's Sculpture

The Glacier Canyon, Gletscherschlucht in German, lies at the foot of the village of Grindelwald, where the Lower Grindelwald Glacier once reached far down the valley. Over thousands of years the ice and its meltwater cut a deep, narrow gorge into the limestone, polishing the rock into smooth curves and leaving walls that rise about ninety metres above the river.

Today the glacier has retreated high up the mountainside, but its meltwater still thunders through the canyon, especially in early summer. Look closely at the rock walls and you can see layers of marble and limestone, scratches left by moving ice, and boulders carried down from the high mountains. Many visitors ask whether the Glacier Canyon is worth visiting; it offers one of the most dramatic close-up views of glacial power in the Alps.

Inside the Canyon: Galleries, Tunnels and the Crystal Exhibition

Your visit begins with a crystal exhibition at the entrance, where quartz and other minerals found in the Alps are displayed. Then a path of about a kilometre follows the gorge, with wooden and metal walkways fixed to the rock face and tunnels blasted through the cliff. Water drips from above, ferns grow in the cracks, and the noise of the river echoes between the walls.

Near the far end, a large net is stretched across the gorge high above the water, and visitors who are brave enough can step onto it and look straight down. Allow about an hour for the full route there and back. Bring a light rain jacket: spray from the river and dripping rock can make the walkways damp, even on sunny days.

Planning Your Visit: Season, Hours and Getting There

The Glacier Canyon is usually open from late spring to autumn, with entry from morning until late afternoon and longer hours in midsummer; outside the season it may be closed or open only for special events, so check the dates. Your ticket gives a set date and entry time, chosen in half-hour slots, which helps avoid queues on busy days.

Knowing how to get to the Glacier Canyon is easy: from the centre of Grindelwald take the local bus to the Gletscherschlucht stop, or walk downhill in about half an hour. Grindelwald itself is about thirty-five minutes by train from Interlaken Ost, so the canyon makes a simple day out from Interlaken too. There is a café and car park at the entrance.

Around the Canyon: Grindelwald and the Jungfrau Region

Grindelwald lies beneath the north face of the Eiger and the Wetterhorn and is one of the liveliest villages in the Jungfrau region. From the centre, gondolas climb to Grindelwald First, with its cliff walk and mountain cart, and the Eiger Express rises towards Jungfraujoch, the high-alpine station on the glacier.

Thrill-seekers can return to the same gorge for the Canyon Swing, a free fall from a platform above the canyon. If you are travelling with family, the Glacier Canyon is a gentler adventure that children love, and it is a good choice when clouds hide the high summits. Halal food is limited in Grindelwald, so bring snacks or plan your main meal in Interlaken.
