Overview

This return ticket takes you from Zermatt village to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, the highest cable car station in Europe at 3,883 m. In about 45 minutes you ride a gondola through larch forest and old Valais hamlets to Trockener Steg, then cross the Theodul Glacier in a heated cable car with panoramic windows. At the top you step onto the summit viewing platform above the Swiss, Italian and French Alps, walk through the Glacier Palace carved inside the ice and watch short films in the cinema lounge. The ticket is valid for one day, so you choose when to go up and how long to stay. It suits couples, families and friends who want Zermatt's highest view without hiking. Full Description

The cable car journey from Zermatt to Trockener Steg

Your trip starts at the valley station on Schluhmattstrasse, at the upper end of Zermatt village, about 15 minutes on foot from the railway station or a short ride by electric bus or e-taxi. A modern gondola climbs above the Matter Vispa river, past wooden chalets, larch and stone pine forest and tiny hamlets such as Furi, where old Valais barns still stand on stone stilts.

Above the tree line the landscape turns to moraine and ice-polished rock, and you reach Trockener Steg at about 2,939 m, a broad terrace facing the north side of the Matterhorn and the Theodul Glacier. In winter this is the heart of the ski area; in summer you may see skiers training on the glacier above. From here you change to the high cable car for the final ascent, so plan a few minutes for the transfer.

Crossing the Theodul Glacier to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise

The last section is the most spectacular part of the journey. Spacious cabins with heated seats and panoramic windows glide high above the crevasses of the Theodul Glacier, with the Breithorn ahead and the Matterhorn on your right. The ride takes about ten minutes and is smooth even on windy days, which is why many visitors call this the best cable car ride in Switzerland.

The summit station is built into the rock of the Klein Matterhorn, just below the peak. A lift and a short tunnel lead to the exits, and from here a separate cable car now continues across the border to Testa Grigia above the Italian resort of Breuil-Cervinia, sold as its own ticket. If you are asking how to get to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise from Zermatt, this return ticket covers the whole route up and back.

The summit viewing platform at 3,883 m

Stairs from the station lead to the summit viewing platform, the highest viewpoint reached by cable car in Europe. On a clear day the panorama sweeps from the Matterhorn, seen from a rare angle on its Italian flank, to the snow dome of Monte Rosa, the Gran Paradiso in Italy and the white mass of Mont Blanc on the French border. Below you, rivers of ice pour down towards Zermatt and the Italian valleys.

Is Matterhorn Glacier Paradise worth visiting? For the sense of standing in a world of permanent snow and ice, yes, but the experience depends on the sky: clouds can hide everything within minutes, so check the live mountain webcams in the morning and go up when it is clear. The air is thin at this height, so walk slowly, drink water and come down if you feel dizzy or unwell.

The Glacier Palace and the cinema lounge

A few steps from the summit station, a tunnel leads into the Glacier Palace, the highest glacier palace in the world, carved about 15 metres below the surface of the ice. Corridors with blue-white walls open into chambers decorated with ice sculptures of animals and mountain scenes, and a short ice slide delights children. The temperature stays below freezing all year, so keep your jacket on and wear shoes with a good grip.

Next to it, the cinema lounge shows short films about mountaineering, alpine plants and animals, the building of the lifts and the life of glaciers, a comfortable place to warm up between viewpoints. Allow 20 to 30 minutes for the palace and the films. The Glacier Palace may close for short maintenance periods, and the summit has a restaurant with regional dishes and a souvenir shop.

Matterhorn Glacier Paradise opening hours and best time to visit

Lifts run every day of the year, from about 8:30 in the morning; the last descent from the summit is around 3:45 PM, a little earlier or later depending on the season, so check the timetable on the day. Allow at least three to four hours in total, including the 45-minute ride each way and one to two hours at the top. Arriving early gives you the clearest air and fewer people on the platform.

The best time to visit Matterhorn Glacier Paradise is a clear morning from late June to September, when the valley is green and the summit still white; winter brings crisp, sharp views and a fully snow-covered landscape. Zermatt is car-free: cars and coaches stop at Täsch, and a shuttle train reaches Zermatt in about 12 minutes. Halal food is limited in Zermatt, so many guests bring their own snacks for the summit.

Good to know

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is the ticket dated or timed?

The ticket is dated: it is valid for one day, the date you choose when booking. It is not timed, so you can take any gondola during opening hours that day and stay at the top as long as you like before the last descent.

Is this a guided tour or a ticket?

It is a cable car ticket for independent visitors, not a guided tour. You travel with other passengers in shared cabins and explore the summit, the Glacier Palace and the cinema lounge at your own pace.

Is the price per person or per group?

The price is per person, with separate rates for adults and children. The booking panel on this page shows the current price for each traveller type on your date.

How many people fit in the cable cars?

The gondola cabins to Trockener Steg seat a few people each, and the large cabins of the final section carry many more passengers. Departures are frequent, so families and groups usually ride together.

Is hotel pickup included?

No. Zermatt is car-free and the valley station is within walking distance of most hotels, or a short ride by electric bus or e-taxi. Our team can arrange a private transfer to Täsch from other Swiss cities on request.

What is included?

The return cable car ride Zermatt – Trockener Steg – Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, access to the summit viewing platform, entry to the Glacier Palace and the cinema lounge. Food, drinks, the glass-floor cabin upgrade and a guide are not included.

How long should I plan for the visit?

About 45 minutes each way plus one to two hours at the top, so three to four hours in total. A full morning is ideal.

Is it suitable for children or people with reduced mobility?

Children from 3 years can go up, and the stations and cabins are wheelchair-accessible, although the highest platform is reached by stairs. Children under 3, pregnant women and people advised to avoid high altitude should not take this trip.

What should I bring?

Your ID, a warm jacket, hat, gloves, warm shoes with a good grip, sunglasses, sun cream and water. Even in July the summit is often below freezing.

What is the best time to go up?

Go up early on a clear day, ideally between 8:30 and 11:00, before clouds build around the peaks. Summer gives green valleys and snowy summits; winter gives sharp, crystal-clear views. Views are never guaranteed.

Is Matterhorn Glacier Paradise or Gornergrat better?

Matterhorn Glacier Paradise is higher and puts you among glaciers and snow; Gornergrat faces the Matterhorn head-on with the classic view and the Gorner Glacier. With time, do both on different days or mornings.

How do I book and confirm?

Choose your date in the booking panel and send your request. Our team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes and sends your ticket and the meeting point details.
