Full Description
Along Lake Geneva and up the Rhône valley
The first part of your Zermatt day trip from Geneva follows the north shore of Lake Geneva, with the terraced slopes of Lavaux above Lausanne and the snowy peaks of the French Alps across the water when the sky is clear. At the eastern end of the lake the road enters the Valais, the sunny canton that follows the Rhône river from its glacier to the lake.
The valley floor is wide and flat, framed by steep mountains on both sides. Near Sion your driver-guide points out the two rocky hills crowned by the Valère basilica and the ruins of Tourbillon castle, landmarks of one of the oldest towns in Switzerland. Higher up, the road turns south at Visp into the Matter valley. The drive to Täsch takes a little over three hours, with a break and photo stops whenever you wish.
Täsch and the electric shuttle into Zermatt
How do you get to Zermatt by car? You don't, quite: the village is car-free, and all vehicles stop at the large terminal in Täsch, about five kilometres below. The shuttle train, included in this tour, leaves every 20 minutes or so and takes about 12 minutes, climbing beside the rushing Matter Vispa river through a narrow gorge.
Your driver-guide parks the vehicle and rides with you, so you never worry about tickets, platforms or timings. Zermatt station sits in the middle of the village; from here small electric buses and electric taxis move people and luggage, and everything else is reached on foot. The Matterhorn Glacier Paradise valley station is at the southern, upper end of the village, around 15 minutes' walk away along the river, or a short ride by electric bus.
Zermatt village: chalets, granaries and the Matterhorn
Zermatt grew from a farming hamlet into one of the most famous mountain resorts in the world after climbers began to arrive in the 19th century. Its main street is lined with wooden chalets, bakeries and outdoor shops, while the Hinterdorf quarter keeps the dark larch granaries raised on stone discs that once protected grain from mice. The parish church and the mountaineers' cemetery beside it tell the story of the peaks above.
On a clear day the Matterhorn, 4,478 m high, appears above the rooftops at almost every corner, and the small bridge by the church is the favourite photo spot. Is Zermatt worth visiting in a day? With a private vehicle doing the driving, yes: you arrive rested and spend your time in the mountains rather than on trains. Halal food is limited in the village, so we suggest snacks or vegetarian and fish dishes.
The cable car to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise
With the default option, the cable car takes you from the valley station above Zermatt to the top in about 45 minutes. A gondola rises over forest and the hamlet of Furi to Trockener Steg at about 2,939 m, a glacier terrace that faces the north side of the Matterhorn. There you change to the high cable car, whose spacious cabins with panoramic windows cross the Theodul Glacier in about ten minutes.
The summit station is set into the rock of the Klein Matterhorn at 3,883 m. Stairs lead to the summit platform, the highest viewpoint in Europe reached by cable car, where on clear days you see the Matterhorn's Italian flank, Monte Rosa, the Gran Paradiso and Mont Blanc. Clouds can close in quickly and the views are never guaranteed; the thin air also means walking slowly and drinking water.
The Glacier Palace and the best time to visit Zermatt
From the summit station a tunnel leads about 15 metres beneath the surface of the glacier into the Glacier Palace, the highest of its kind in the world. Blue-white ice corridors open into chambers with sculptures of animals and mountain scenes, and a short ice slide is a favourite with children. The temperature stays below freezing all year, and the caves can close for maintenance, so access is never guaranteed.
The best time to visit Zermatt and the glacier is a clear morning from late June to September, or a crisp sunny day in winter when the whole valley is white. An early start from Geneva gives you more time at the top before afternoon clouds. On the way back down, your driver-guide meets you for the shuttle to Täsch and the evening drive along the lake to your hotel.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private tour?
Every option is private: the vehicle and the English-speaking driver-guide are for your party only, and no other travellers join you.
What is the difference between the options?
The default option includes the cable car to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and the Glacier Palace ice caves. The second private option is the same day with free time in Zermatt village only, without the cable car.
Can we change the itinerary or the pace?
Yes. You decide how long to stay in the village and at the top, and you can ask for extra photo stops on the way. Your driver-guide adapts the order to the weather, for example going up first if the morning is clear.
How many people fit in the vehicle?
The tour is for your own party, whatever its size. Tell us how many people are travelling when you book and we provide a private vehicle of the right size.
Is the price per person or per group?
Each option is priced per person while the vehicle stays private to your party. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option for your date.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes, pickup and drop-off at your hotel in central Geneva are included in every option.
What is included?
The private vehicle, hotel pickup and drop-off in Geneva, a private English-speaking driver-guide, the electric shuttle between Täsch and Zermatt and free time in Zermatt, plus, in the default option, the cable car to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and the Glacier Palace. Lunch, drinks, personal expenses and gratuities are not included.
How long is the tour?
About 13 hours from pickup to drop-off, including a little over three hours of driving each way.
Is it suitable for children or people with reduced mobility?
Children are welcome, and the private vehicle makes a long day easier. The cable cars have lifts, but stairs on the summit platform, snow and thin air can be difficult for some; please tell us about mobility needs before booking.
What should we bring?
Warm layers, a hat, gloves, sunglasses, sun cream, closed shoes with a good grip, your passport or ID, snacks and any medicine you take.
What is the best season and time of day?
Clear mornings from late June to September and sunny winter days give the best views. The early pickup is chosen so that you reach the glacier before clouds usually build up in the afternoon.
How do I book and confirm?
Choose your option, date and number of travellers in the booking panel on this page and send your request. Our team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes.
