Full Description
Zermatt and the Matterhorn from the air
Few places in the Alps offer a flight like this. Zermatt lies in a deep, narrow valley ringed by high peaks above 4,000 m, and the Matterhorn, 4,478 m high, rises at its head like a lone pyramid. From a paraglider you see the mountain without any cable or window between you and the view, together with the Gorner and Findel glaciers spilling down from the Monte Rosa massif.
As you glide lower, the details appear: the larch and stone pine forests, the grey roofs of the old wooden barns, the green meadows of the hamlets above the village and the Matter Vispa river running through Zermatt. Is paragliding in Zermatt worth it? For many visitors it is the most memorable moment of their Swiss trip, a quiet, floating view of the Matterhorn that no train or cable car can match.
The take-off sites above Zermatt
Your pilot chooses the take-off site on the day according to the wind and weather. The usual launch areas are on the sunny slopes of Sunnegga and Rothorn, above the Five Lakes area, or on the meadows of Riffelberg below Gornergrat, all of them with the Matterhorn in full view. The default option includes your one-way mountain lift ticket, so you simply ride up with your pilot and walk a few minutes to the launch.
The Sunnegga line starts with an underground funicular from the village, then continues by gondola and cable car to higher stations; this is also how to get to the Five Lakes area and the Rothorn viewpoint on any other day of your stay. Because take-off sites lie well above 2,000 m, it is much colder than in the village, which is why the warm flight suit, hat and gloves are part of the equipment.
Your tandem paragliding flight step by step
Before take-off your pilot fits your harness and helmet and explains the few things you need to do: lean forward, run a few steps when told, and sit back into the seat once you are airborne. The pilot steers the wing, reads the air and handles the landing, while you sit comfortably and enjoy the scenery. Flight time depends on the take-off site and the conditions of the day.
Once in the air, the ride is smooth and surprisingly quiet. If you feel confident, your pilot can show you a few gentle turns; if you prefer a calm glide, just say so. The landing field is close to the village, and you land on your feet with a few running steps or sitting gently on the grass. The whole experience takes about two hours, including the ride up, preparation and the flight.
Best time for paragliding in Zermatt
Tandem flights operate all year whenever wind and weather allow. Summer, from June to September, gives long days, green meadows and the softest air in the morning, while winter flights over snow-covered forests and frozen streams have a magic of their own, with crisp views. The best time of day is usually the morning or late afternoon, when the air is calmer and the light on the Matterhorn is soft.
Mountain weather changes quickly, and pilots decide on the day whether flying is safe. If a slot cannot fly, it is moved to another time or day where possible. Plan your flight early in your Zermatt stay to keep a backup day. The Matterhorn often wears a cloud banner, so views are never guaranteed, but even a flight over the valley and glaciers is unforgettable.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private experience?
Each flight is a one-to-one tandem flight: you fly alone with your own pilot. Friends and family fly with separate pilots, often at the same time when pilots are available.
Do I need any experience?
No. Your pilot gives you a short briefing, flies the wing and handles take-off and landing. You only need to run a few steps when asked.
Can we choose the time or change the pace?
You choose a slot when booking: 9:30, 11:30, 13:30 or 15:30. In the air you can ask for a calm, gentle flight or a few more dynamic turns.
How many people can fly together?
Each paraglider carries one passenger with one pilot. Groups can fly one after another or side by side depending on pilot availability on the day.
Is the price per person or per group?
The price is per person. There are two options, with and without the lift ticket to the take-off site, and the booking panel on this page shows the current price of each.
Is hotel pickup included?
No. You meet your pilot at a meeting point in Zermatt village, within walking distance of most hotels.
What is included?
With the default option: the one-way mountain lift ticket to the take-off site, the tandem flight with a certified pilot, the safety briefing, all flying equipment and harness, and a warm flight suit, helmet, hat and gloves. Photos and videos are optional extras.
How long does it take?
About two hours in total, including the ride up, preparation and the flight. Time in the air depends on the site and the conditions.
Is it suitable for children or people with reduced mobility?
Older children and teenagers can usually fly with parental consent if they can run a few steps. It is not suitable for people with reduced mobility, back or heart problems, or for pregnant women.
What happens if the weather is bad?
The pilots decide on the day. If flying is not safe, your slot is moved to another time or day where possible, or the flight is cancelled and you are informed straight away.
What is the best time to fly?
Morning flights usually have the calmest air and the clearest Matterhorn views; summer and clear winter days are both beautiful. Views are never guaranteed.
How do I book and confirm?
