Full Description
From Basel SBB across Switzerland by train
Your day starts at Basel SBB, the city's main railway station on the Rhine, right on the border with France and Germany. The train heads south through the Jura hills to Olten and on to Bern, the Swiss capital, then follows the Aare towards Spiez on the shore of Lake Thun, with the snowy peaks of the Bernese Oberland ahead on clear days.
After Spiez the train enters the Lötschberg Base Tunnel, one of the longest railway tunnels in the world, and emerges in the Rhône valley at Visp. There you change to the narrow-gauge line that climbs the Matter valley to Zermatt. The journey takes just under three hours. If you are wondering how to get to Zermatt from Basel, this is the simplest way, and on this trip your guide takes care of every ticket and connection.
Zermatt's old quarter and the church bridge
On arrival your guide leads a walk of about an hour through car-free Zermatt, where only small electric vehicles share the streets with pedestrians. You start on the lively main street lined with chalets, bakeries and chocolate shops, then reach the church square with its white parish church and the quiet lanes behind it.
The Hinterdorf, Zermatt's old quarter, is the highlight of the walk: dark larch barns and granaries raised on stone discs to keep mice from the grain, many of them several centuries old, crowd along narrow paths. Your guide stops at the church bridge over the Matter Vispa, the classic photo point where the Matterhorn rises above the river on clear days, and shares stories of village life before tourism.
Gornergrat Railway with priority boarding
Next you board the Gornergrat Railway, the cogwheel line opened in 1898 that climbs from opposite Zermatt station to a summit at 3,089 m. Priority boarding passes make the start easy even in busy seasons. The ride takes about 33 minutes, through larch forest, over the Findelbach bridge and past the stations of Riffelalp, Riffelberg and Rotenboden.
Sit on the right-hand side for the best Matterhorn views as the train rises above the tree line into a world of rock, snow and alpine meadows. Gornergrat opening hours are generous, with trains running every day of the year, and the railway is one of the highest open-air cog railways in Europe. Your guide points out the peaks on the way, from the Matterhorn to the Weisshorn and the Dom.
An hour and a half on the Gornergrat summit
At the top you have about an hour and a half to enjoy one of the great panoramas of the Alps. The Matterhorn stands face to face with you, while the Gorner Glacier, the second largest in the Alps, curves below the Monte Rosa massif, whose Dufourspitze, at 4,634 m, is the highest peak in Switzerland. A small stone chapel and a summit building with observatory domes complete the scene.
Is Gornergrat worth visiting? For many travellers it is the finest Matterhorn view of all, and the time at the top lets you walk to the viewing platform, take photos and have a warm drink or a snack. Temperatures are far lower than in the village, so dress warmly. Clouds can cover the peaks quickly, and mountain views are never guaranteed.
Best time to visit Zermatt from Basel and practical tips
The best time to visit Zermatt from Basel is between June and September, when the meadows are green and the days long, or from December to March for a snowy winter scene. Clear mornings usually give the best visibility, and the trip is timed to put you on Gornergrat in good light whenever possible.
Basel has halal restaurants and shops, while halal food is limited in Zermatt, so bring a packed lunch for the day; vegetarian and fish dishes are easy to find in the village. Bring your passport or ID card, as the guide checks travel documents, and wear comfortable shoes and warm layers. The day ends back in Basel in the evening, about twelve hours after departure.
