Full Description
From Zurich to Täsch: the drive across the Swiss Alps
Your private Zermatt day trip from Zurich begins with an early pickup at your hotel or apartment. The drive to Täsch takes about three and a half hours, and your driver-guide chooses the best route on the day according to traffic and season, usually past Bern and the lakes of the Bernese Oberland before crossing into the Valais and its deep Rhône valley.
Because the vehicle is yours, you can ask for a coffee break, a short stretch of the legs or a photo stop above a lake or a mountain village. Your driver-guide uses the journey to explain Swiss life, the railways tunnelled through the Alps and the history of the Valais, a canton where French and German are both spoken. Families appreciate the comfortable seats and the bottled water on board, and nobody needs to handle train changes with luggage or children.
Täsch and the shuttle train to car-free Zermatt
How to get to Zermatt is the first question many visitors ask: Zermatt is car-free, so private vehicles stop at Täsch, about five kilometres down the valley. A shuttle train runs from the Täsch terminal every 20 minutes or so and reaches Zermatt in about 12 minutes, climbing beside the Matter Vispa river through a narrow, wooded gorge.
Your driver-guide parks at the terminal and travels with you to Zermatt, so you arrive without any stress about tickets or platforms. Inside the village, electric taxis and small electric buses replace cars, which keeps the air clean and the streets quiet. The station square is the starting point for everything: the main street, the Gornergrat railway opposite and the way to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise valley station at the upper end of the village, about 15 minutes away on foot.
Zermatt village and the best Matterhorn viewpoints
Zermatt lies at about 1,600 m beneath the Matterhorn, a 4,478 m pyramid of rock that rises alone above the valley. During your free time you can stroll along the lively Bahnhofstrasse, visit the white parish church of St. Mauritius and the cemetery where mountaineers who lost their lives on the surrounding peaks are remembered, and wander into the Hinterdorf quarter, where dark larch-wood granaries stand on stone discs that kept mice away from the grain.
The classic photo is taken from the small bridge near the church over the Matter Vispa, with the Matterhorn framed above the rooftops on a clear day. A small museum near the church tells the story of the village, from farming hamlet to world-famous resort. Halal food is limited in Zermatt, so we advise bringing snacks or choosing vegetarian and fish dishes in the village.
The cable car to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise
From the valley station at the upper end of the village, a modern gondola climbs above forests of larch and stone pine and small hamlets such as Furi to Trockener Steg at about 2,939 m. There you change to the high cable car, whose cabins with panoramic windows glide above the crevasses of the Theodul Glacier for about ten minutes. The full ride up takes around 45 minutes.
The summit station is cut into the rock of the Klein Matterhorn, and a lift leads to the exits. Your driver-guide helps you plan the timing so you have the best balance between village time and glacier time. Is Matterhorn Glacier Paradise worth visiting on a day trip? For many guests it is the highlight of a trip to Switzerland: you leave green meadows behind and step, in less than an hour, into a world of permanent snow and ice.
The summit platform and the Glacier Palace at 3,883 m
Stairs from the station lead to the summit viewing platform, the highest viewpoint in Europe reached by cable car. On a clear day you see the Matterhorn from an unusual angle, the snow dome of Monte Rosa, the peaks of the Italian Alps and, far to the west, the white mass of Mont Blanc. Clouds can hide the view within minutes, so it is never guaranteed, and the air is thin: walk slowly and drink water.
A short tunnel leads into the Glacier Palace, carved about 15 metres below the surface of the glacier, with blue-white corridors, ice sculptures and a small ice slide that children love. It stays below freezing all year and can close briefly for maintenance. Allow 60 to 90 minutes at the top before riding down to Zermatt, where your driver-guide accompanies you back by shuttle train to the vehicle in Täsch.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private tour?
It is fully private. The vehicle and the English-speaking driver-guide are for your party only, and no other travellers join you at any point of the day.
Can we change the itinerary or the pace?
Yes, within the day. You decide how long to stay in the village and at the summit, and you can ask for extra photo stops or breaks on the way. Your driver-guide adjusts the plan to the weather, for example going up to the glacier first if the morning is clear.
How many people can join and how many fit in the vehicle?
The tour is for your own party, from a single traveller to a family or group of friends. When you book, tell us how many people are travelling and we send a private vehicle of the right size.
Is the price per person or per group?
The tour is priced per person, with a lower rate for children, and the whole vehicle remains private to your party. The booking panel on this page shows the current price for your date and number of travellers.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes. We pick you up at any address in Zurich and drop you back at the same place in the evening.
What is included?
Private transport for your party, pickup and drop-off in Zurich, a private English-speaking driver-guide, free time in Zermatt, the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise cable car ticket and bottled water. Lunch, food, drinks and personal expenses are not included.
How long is the tour?
About 11 hours from pickup to drop-off, including around three and a half hours of driving each way and roughly four hours in Zermatt and on the glacier.
Is it suitable for children or people with reduced mobility?
Children are welcome and the private vehicle makes the long day easier for families. The cable cars and the summit station have lifts, but the platform stairs, snow and thin air can be hard for some visitors; tell us about any mobility needs before booking so we can advise you.
Will we see the Matterhorn?
The Matterhorn is often visible on clear days, but mountain weather changes quickly and views are never guaranteed. Your driver-guide checks the live webcams and adapts the order of the day to give you the best chance.
What should we bring?
A warm jacket, hat, gloves, sunglasses, sun cream, closed shoes with a good grip, your passport or ID, snacks and any medicine you need.
When is the best time of year and day to go?
Clear mornings from late June to September give green valleys and white peaks, while winter brings snow everywhere and very crisp air. In any season, an early pickup gives you more time at the top before clouds build up.
How do I book and confirm?
Choose your date, start time and number of travellers in the booking panel on this page and send your request. Our team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes and shares the pickup details.
