Full Description

Lucerne, the city of the Chapel Bridge

Lucerne sits where the Reuss river leaves Lake Lucerne, surrounded by mountains. Its landmark is the Chapel Bridge, a covered wooden footbridge first built in the 14th century with painted panels under its roof and the stone Water Tower rising beside it. Much of the bridge was rebuilt after a fire in 1993, yet it remains one of the oldest covered bridges in Europe.

During your stop, the guide points out the medieval old town with its frescoed façades and the Lion Monument, a dying lion carved into the rock to honour Swiss Guards killed in Paris in 1792. A Lucerne day trip is often the first taste of Switzerland for visitors, and even a short visit shows why the city is so loved.

Engelberg and the ride up Titlis

Engelberg is a mountain village at about 1,000 metres, grown up around a Benedictine monastery founded in 1120. From here a series of cable cars climbs past the Trübsee lake towards the glacier. The final section normally uses the Rotair, the world's first revolving cable car, which turns a full circle so everyone sees the cliffs and crevasses below.

In 2026 a new summit station and tower are under construction. The Rotair is closed from mid-August to mid-December 2026 and a non-revolving cable car is used instead, and from June 2026 time at the summit is limited to about one hour before continuing to the Trübsee middle station, where restaurants are open.

Titlis Cliff Walk and Glacier Cave

Mount Titlis rises to 3,238 metres and is the highest viewpoint in central Switzerland reachable by cable car. At the top station, the Cliff Walk hangs above a drop of around 500 metres; opened in 2012 at more than 3,000 metres, it is one of the highest suspension bridges in Europe and only about a metre wide, so it is a thrill even for confident walkers.

Inside the glacier, a walkway leads through the Glacier Cave, a tunnel of blue ice about 150 metres long where the temperature stays below zero all year. Both are included on this Mount Titlis tour, weather permitting. The optional TITLIS Horizon observation deck, if open, is paid on the spot.

The Ice Flyer and the snow on Titlis

The Ice Flyer is an open chairlift that floats over the glacier and its crevasses to the glacier park, a snow area where, in season, you can slide down on snow tubes. From the chair you look straight down into cracks in the ice and across to the Alps of central Switzerland, with the Bernese peaks visible on clear days.

Snow covers Titlis all year, which makes it one of the most reliable places to see real snow in summer. The best time to visit Mount Titlis is on a clear morning, so check the forecast; in low cloud or strong wind, some activities may be closed. Bring sunglasses and sun cream, as the glare from the snow is strong.
