Overview

Leave Lausanne in the morning and spend the day in Zermatt, the car-free village beneath the Matterhorn. An English-speaking driver-guide accompanies the air-conditioned coach along the Lavaux terraces and through the Rhône valley of the Valais, then a shuttle train takes you from Täsch into the village. With the default option you ride the return cable car to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise at 3,883 m, the highest cable car station in Europe, for glacier views over three countries before free time among Zermatt's chalets and old barns. Another option skips the cable car for a longer village visit. It is a shared coach day trip, perfect for couples, families and friends staying on the Lake Geneva shore who want an easy day in the high Alps. Mountain views are never guaranteed.

Full Description

Lausanne and the Lavaux terraces

Your day begins in Lausanne, the hilly Olympic city on the north shore of Lake Geneva, where the Gothic cathedral overlooks the old town and the lakeside district of Ouchy faces the French Alps across the water. Soon after leaving the city, the coach runs above the Lavaux terraces, steep stone-walled slopes rising from the lake that UNESCO listed as a World Heritage cultural landscape in 2007.

The terraces were built by monks from the 11th century onwards, and the small villages of Lutry, Cully and Chexbres cling to them between the railway line and the motorway. From the road you get wide views of the lake and of the Savoy mountains on the French side, especially beautiful in the soft morning light. Your driver-guide shares the story of the Riviera as you continue east towards Montreux.

Through the Rhône valley to the Matter valley

Past Montreux and the medieval Chillon Castle on its rock in the lake, the road enters the wide Rhône valley. You pass Aigle with its turreted castle, Saint-Maurice, home to an abbey founded in 515 and still active today, and Martigny, a crossroads since Roman times. Further on, Sion appears with its two castle hills, Valère and Tourbillon, rising from the valley floor.

At Visp the coach leaves the Rhône and climbs south into the narrow Matter valley, past the villages of Stalden and St. Niklaus, with glimpses of glaciers high above. A Zermatt day trip from Lausanne takes about three hours each way by road, a little less than from Geneva, which leaves comfortable time in the village and on the mountain. The coach stops at Täsch, the last village open to traffic.

Matterhorn Glacier Paradise

From Täsch the shuttle train reaches Zermatt in about 12 minutes, and with the default option you head to the valley station of the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise cable cars. Gondolas rise over forests and hamlets to Trockener Steg, where a heated cable car with panoramic windows crosses the Theodul Glacier to the summit station on the Klein Matterhorn, the highest cable car station in Europe at 3,883 m.

The viewing platform at the top looks over the Swiss, Italian and French Alps, with the Matterhorn close by, the snowy dome of Monte Rosa and, on the clearest days, Mont Blanc on the horizon. Snow covers the summit all year and temperatures stay below freezing, so warm clothes are essential. Allow about three hours for the round trip and your time at the top. Clouds can hide the peaks, and views are never guaranteed.

Free time in Zermatt village

Zermatt has been a mountain resort since the 19th century, yet its heart remains a village of dark larch chalets, flower boxes and narrow lanes. Stroll along the main street from the station to the church square, then step into the Hinterdorf quarter, where old barns and granaries stand on stone discs. The village museum explains how farmers lived here and how the first visitors and mountain guides shaped Zermatt.

For the best Matterhorn photo, head to the Kirchbrücke bridge over the Matter Vispa, or follow the river to the quieter lanes beyond. Swiss chocolate shops and bakeries line the streets for a sweet break. Is Zermatt worth a day trip from Lausanne? Yes, if you start early: the change from the lake to a world of glaciers in one morning is unforgettable.

Best time to visit Zermatt and practical tips

The best time to visit Zermatt is from June to September, when meadows bloom and days are long, or from December to April for snow and winter scenery. Mornings are usually clearer than afternoons, when clouds often gather around the Matterhorn, so the trip is timed to put you on the mountain before midday where possible. Weather in the high Alps can change in minutes.

Halal food is limited in Zermatt, while Lausanne has halal restaurants and shops, so a packed lunch from Lausanne is a good idea; vegetarian and fish dishes are easy to find in the village. Wear layers: it can be warm in the village and freezing at the summit. If you would rather travel by train, how to get to Zermatt from Lausanne is simple too: change at Visp, about three hours in total.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this a shared or a private tour?

It is a shared coach day trip with other travellers and a driver-guide. In Zermatt you explore and ride the cable car independently. Our team can also arrange a private transfer if you prefer your own vehicle.

Can we change the itinerary or the pace?

The coach times are fixed, but your time in Zermatt is free: spend it at the summit, in the village or both, as long as you meet the shuttle train on time.

How many people are in the group?

It is a shared coach, so numbers vary with the date. In Zermatt everyone moves independently, so the group size hardly affects your day.

Is the price per person or per group?

The price is per person. There are two options, with and without the Glacier Paradise cable car, and the booking panel on this page shows the current price of each.

Is hotel pickup included?

No. The trip starts from a central Lausanne meeting point sent with your confirmation.

What is included?

Return coach Lausanne – Täsch, the English-speaking driver-guide, the shuttle train Täsch – Zermatt and back, free time in Zermatt and, with the default option, the return cable car to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. Food, drinks and tips are not included.

How long is the day trip?

About 11.5 hours with the cable car option and about 12 hours with the village-only option, from Lausanne and back.

Is it suitable for children or reduced mobility?

Families with children enjoy it, though the day is long; children under 3 and pregnant women should not go up to 3,883 m. The cable car stations are accessible, and central Zermatt is flat.

What should I bring?

ID, a warm jacket, hat and gloves, good shoes, sunglasses, sun cream, water and a packed lunch or snacks.

When is the best time of year for this trip?

June to September for green valleys and long days, December to April for snow. Clear mornings give the best Matterhorn views, but they are never guaranteed.

Can I see the Matterhorn from Zermatt village?

Yes, on clear days the Matterhorn is visible from many points in the village, especially the Kirchbrücke bridge and the upper streets. Clouds often cover the summit in the afternoon.
