Full Description
Mürren: Car-Free Village on a Cliff Terrace
Mürren sits at about 1,640 metres on a natural balcony high above the Lauterbrunnen valley, facing the great wall of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. No cars reach the village, so its lanes of wooden chalets, small hotels and flowering gardens are peaceful in every season, and the air is clear and fresh.
Knowing how to get to Mürren is part of the adventure: from Lauterbrunnen a cable car climbs to Grütschalp, where a small panoramic train runs along the cliff edge to the village, about thirty minutes in all. Alternatively, a bus from Lauterbrunnen reaches Stechelberg, where the Schilthorn cable car rises via Gimmelwald to Mürren. Our flight meets right next to the Schilthorn cable car station in the village.
Lauterbrunnen Valley from the Air
The Lauterbrunnen valley is a classic U-shaped glacial valley, its flat green floor framed by limestone cliffs several hundred metres high. Waterfalls pour over the edges all along the valley, the best known being Staubbach Falls, which drops almost three hundred metres beside the village of Lauterbrunnen.
From your paraglider you see the valley as few people ever do: the sheer walls seem close enough to touch, waterfalls turn to mist in the sunlight and tiny farms dot the meadows far below. Many visitors call Lauterbrunnen the most beautiful valley in Switzerland, and a paragliding flight is the most memorable way to discover it. Your pilot can keep the flight smooth and gentle or add a few turns if you want more excitement.
Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau: the Famous Trio
Straight ahead during the flight rise the three most famous peaks of the Bernese Oberland: the Eiger, with its dark north face, the Mönch and the Jungfrau, all close to or above 4,000 metres. Their glaciers feed the rivers and waterfalls of the valley below, and on a clear day the snowfields shine brightly against the sky.
These mountains are also the heart of the UNESCO Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch area. Views depend on the weather: on cloudy days the peaks may hide, but the cliffs and waterfalls of the valley remain dramatic. The best time for paragliding over Lauterbrunnen is usually from late spring to early autumn, with calmer air in the morning; winter flights offer snowy scenery when conditions allow.
Landing in Stechelberg and Around the Valley Floor
Your flight ends on a landing field in Stechelberg, the last hamlet at the head of the Lauterbrunnen valley, right next to the valley station of the Schilthorn cable car. From here a regular bus takes you back to Lauterbrunnen in about fifteen minutes, or you can follow the easy riverside path past waterfalls.
Nearby, the Trümmelbach Falls thunder through a series of gorges inside the mountain, carrying meltwater from the glaciers of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, a great stop after your flight in summer. You can also ride the cable car up towards the Schilthorn summit for its revolving restaurant and panorama. Halal food is limited in the villages of the valley, so pack a snack or plan your main meal in Interlaken.
