Full Description
By train from Interlaken into the Lauterbrunnen valley
Your day starts at a meeting point in central Interlaken, where your guide gathers the group and hands out the travel tickets. The mountain railway runs south along the Lütschine river through a narrowing wooded gorge, and in about 20 minutes the valley suddenly opens: grey limestone walls rise almost vertically on both sides, with waterfalls dropping over their edges.
How to get to Lauterbrunnen from Interlaken is simple by train, but travelling with a local guide means you also learn how glaciers carved this U-shaped valley during the Ice Ages, how the farmers of the valley lived, and which viewpoints give the best photos. The small group makes it easy to move together on and off trains and cable cars without waiting for a large crowd.
Lauterbrunnen village and Staubbach Falls
Lauterbrunnen village sits on the valley floor at about 800 m, a cluster of wooden chalets and a white church surrounded by meadows. Above it, Staubbach Falls plunges almost 300 m from the cliff, one of the highest free-falling waterfalls in Switzerland. The water turns to fine mist as it falls, which gave the falls their name, and on sunny mornings rainbows often appear in the spray.
Your guide leads the group to the best viewpoints at the foot of the falls and along the village, with time for photos of the classic view of chalets, church and cliff. Is Lauterbrunnen worth visiting? With its scale, waterfalls and quiet villages, it is one of the most striking valleys in the Alps, and the best time to visit is late spring and early summer, when snowmelt fills every fall.
Trümmelbach Falls inside the mountain
A few kilometres up the valley, the Trümmelbach Falls are a series of glacier waterfalls that thunder through twisting gorges carved inside the mountain. They carry the meltwater of the glaciers of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, and in high summer the flow can reach thousands of litres per second, filling the rock with noise and spray.
A tunnel lift and lit stairways let visitors climb past the falls through the heart of the rock. Entry is not included and is at your own expense if you choose to visit when the route allows. Trümmelbach Falls opening hours run from about April to early November, and the visit takes around 45 minutes; the paths are wet and steep in places, so good shoes are essential and the falls are not suitable for small children.
Up to Mürren by cable car
From the valley floor the group rides a cable car up the cliff toward Mürren, gaining several hundred metres in just a few minutes. Depending on the route chosen for the day, the journey continues along the plateau with wide views across the valley, or reaches the village directly. Either way, the ride is a highlight, with the valley floor shrinking beneath you and the waterfalls on the opposite wall.
How to get to Mürren is part of its charm: no road reaches the village, so trains and cable cars are the only links. Your guide manages all the tickets and connections, which keeps the day relaxed. On the way, look out for Gimmelwald, a tiny farming hamlet on a ledge below Mürren where wooden barns and haystacks still dot the meadows.
Mürren, the car-free village on the cliff edge
Mürren sits at about 1,640 m on a terrace above a sheer drop into the Lauterbrunnen valley. Its chalets, small churches and flower-filled balconies face one of the greatest panoramas in the Alps: the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau rising directly opposite across the valley, with glaciers glittering on their flanks on clear days.
Your guide leads an easy stroll through the village to the best viewpoints, with free time for lunch at your own expense, photos or a rest on a terrace. Mürren is quiet and car-free, with only small electric vehicles serving the hotels. Halal food is limited in the village, so bring snacks if needed. The best time to visit Mürren is June to September for green meadows and wildflowers, or winter for snowy scenery.
